@Rachelsdaddy so I've read along with all the struggles you've had with your 3rz with interest because I've had similar struggles with mine, and I am always eager to learn more.

With my own own (barely related but I kinda see a connection) experience. When I first bought my first 3rz (it was in a 98 4runner, but it's currently installed in my tacoma) it ran, was kinda rough and had a check engine light for a catalytic converter code but drove everywhere I wanted... finally started to fail me more and die one me. Figured out cyl 3 had low compression. Took the head off and figured out the head was cracked between the exhaust valves of cyl 3 as well as the guy I bought it from had permatexed the head gasket onto the block which ended of starving the top end of oil and scarring the exhaust cam on cyl 1... my point is it still ran.

I think you'll run into at least 1 shim that is enough out of tolerance to justify the valve shim kit purchase you made, and after all the hard work you put into checking and changing that shim, when you get it all back together your buttdyno is going to be sensitive enough you'll notice a difference in it's performance, at least one way or another

I hope you were able to get the work done today!

My 2001 maintenance manual says to check valve clearance every 60,000 miles or 48 months.
