Exactly... if you need a 3/4 ton diesel, buy a 3/4 ton diesel, a Tacoma won't stand up to it when it comes to towing, that's why we have different classes of trucks. A Tacoma is a mid-sized truck with the capability of towing well outside of it's class. It's a smaller, more managable truck than a full size but able to step and get the job done when needed.

I tow a lot of different trailers.. tongue weight needs to be set right.. and brakes!! I've almost lost it when my trailer brakes went out down a wet leaf covered road with about 5k pounds, so brakes are the most important thing for towing.

i towed approx a 1200 -1500 lb trailer. cant say for sure, and about 1.8 tons of gravel, which is at around 5300lb. give or take, with about 200-300obs of work gear in theback of teh dbl cab. drove the gravel from the quarry to my house which was approx 3 miles away. my experience to my first exp towing is...brakes seemed to be very soft, but used engine braking to slow down as i drive a manual. did not go over 40 mph tops anyway. steering was no issue, control was no issue. gas did burn fast as i did make so far about 5 trips so far and each time about the same tonnage. im impressed that the taco did this so well, but def see why anything bigger will need trailer brakes....this is the limit to what weight it can comfortably STOP without assistance driving a manual. i would not feel safe if the wieght was heavier

Wow, I've never gotten that bad, but you are right, those Kansas winds can just kill a tank of gas.

I agree that the 6,500lb limit would be outside of my comfort zone with this truck. Part of the reason I bought it was so that I could feasibly tow my Mustang around town to shops, etc. if I needed, but I do have a brake controller. When I moved I was towing probably 3000lbs in total trailer and furniture, etc. and I could definitely feel it. Again, it's just a matter of knowing the limits of the truck, I agree.

I don't think towing is the truck's strong suit, though.

X2 on what others have said. Thats wonderful that your diesel pulls more than a mid sized tacoma. Since we are comparing vehicles straight up lets see that diesel navigate whoops in the dunes. What??? There is no long travel kit for a cumins diesel? Thats because a diesel is made for towing/hauling. A guarantee that tacoma will do better at towing than a diesel will handle sand and whoops. You cant compare a full size diesel to midsize pickup. Thats my $0.02

Hell, I hauled my Firebird on a trailer from Victoria B.C. to Kitchener, ON. Rocky mountains, and everything! Yeah, my MPG wasn't the best, especially in the prairie provinces, where the wind was coming right at me, but the truck pulled it all off, no problem. I was actually very surprised at the Taco's ability to tow so much weight.

Toyota rated the truck to 6500 lbs, so with the right equipement, I don't see why anyone should be afraid to go to the manufacturer's limit. It probably is still under the thrue capability of the truck, since the manufacturer always want to protect his ass Sure you can feel it, even 1 passenger beside me and I can feel it in the difference in accelerations of my truck.

Foglights are for fog, not oncoming traffic!
I'm comparing them to trucks that don't have under-engineered frames, springs, brakes(stepping on a sponge)...Why should I have to buy an AAL or, as I did, put in airbags to make up for the lame-ass engineering and suppliers that Toyota specs?
I'm not comparing Toyota to a Cummins 2500, just any truck in the same category.
In re backing a boat trailer, my original point was this is not a competent 6000lb tow vehicle, and you admitted as such so quit defending...it makes you look stupid.
The Tacoma is incompetent but I had to spend a bunch of cash to find it out because the fanboys and koolaid drinkers had me convinced otherwise.

    you are kinda a jack-ass, aren't you? :D

Man my old dually F-350 super duty would totally kick the shit out of my tacoma.
    • I mean it got 14mpg on a good day
    • didn't fit anywhere
    • had close to zero suspension articulation
    • was severely more expensive when new
    • and hauled 19,200 lbs with the prodigy brake controller I had to PAY FOR!!
You are obviously a tool for buying the wrong truck and listening to the fan-boys. Like many other people here, I've pulled 5,000+ lbs with my taco and it did a great job for being a mid-sized truck. BTW, the frames on these trucks are pretty solid and to haul much over 3,000lbs you need to have trailer brakes...

The ignorance displayed by some on this forum is quite amusing really. I'm not pointing fingers at anyone, just talking in general.

As others have said, for the size of the truck, it tows very well, when set up correctly.
