Partially agree with you. $10/day is a joke, no one can support themselves on that. I'm fortunate enough that my work will pay for me even though I'm on jury duty so my only inconvenience is my deadlines don't change so it's late nights and weekend work to get caught up, no big deal. Others aren't as fortunate and their bosses aren't as nice about it. While your employer can't fire you for missing work they can certainly make your life hell for a while. Also, some people struggle to make ends meet with their normal wages and now you expect them to take $10/day as payment when money's already tight?

Sucks when you are self employed, but I think you normally get excused.

I always thought it would be neat to be on jury duty, and where I work at if you go for jury duty you still get paid for the days that you were gone.

They asked us a bunch of questions and I got dismissed, I don't know what the reasoning was. I guess they didn't like me

Never been to jury duty. Craziest thing, every time I get a summons I trip and drop the envelope into my paper shredder before I am able to open it and read where I need to go!

Its really not all that bad, you get paid to sit around and wait and not work... How is the painful?

Plus i got called in a few years ago for a pretty sweet murder trial... hey at least it was entertaining! :D

Only if your company pays you to be there, not all do. Legally they don't have to and you only get the $10/day the court pays you. Plus, if you have a busy job, or are self-employed, you have to play catch-up because you just lost a day or more depending on the trial type.

Right but whos to say what you what a good wage is ? $20 a hour might cover you but someone else might need $100 a hour to cover his losses. it would never be fair. The $10 a day and $40 per day after is to cover parking and food probably. I think that jury duty brings all down to the same level, its what makes america what it is. Chalk it up has the cost for living in a free country. This is a good discussion !

Agreed for the most part, but in one of my previous posts I said if you're barely making ends meet with your regular wage and for 1 or 2 days you now only bring in $10/day, that could really hurt. I don't agree the court should pay your normal wage since people make different salaries but there should be something different done. Maybe something like a per diem based on the county you're serving in since costs of living vary greatly.

I thought it was a blast! I got almost an entire week off work and made about $70 that I got to keep. Even got paid for work while I was out. I also got sequestered. Was a cool experience, but was a bit of a bummer to not be able to contact fam, watch TV, talk on phone etc.

Or at the very least, pay minimum wage (hourly).

I've been called twice, both times got out of it (was moving prior to my report date).

I've got mixed feelings. On one hand, it's BS that they pay so little. On the other hand, if I was on trial, I'd be pissed b/c it seems (at least, from media coverage) that the lawyers choose based on how they think they can influence the juror. Ie, gullible and naive.

My biggest sticking point is "jury of your peers." Really?? From Merriam-Webster: "one that is of equal standing with another: EQUAL; especially: one belonging to the same societal group especially based on age, grade or status."
I bet though that they don't pick all the gangsta thugs when there's a trial for gang-related crimes. Businessmen don't try other businessmen. Physicians don't get tried by physicians.

The idea of making all the people on welfare and unemployment be selected for jury duty more often than not is an interesting point that should be considered with stipulations (mix them in with regular working class, but selected more often). And yeah it sucks for your job, but at the same time, it kind of is like a trade off for being able to vote. THose of you who think it is your right vote but not do jury duty follow the "have your cake and eat it too" motto apparently. Honestly, I would be pissed if I had a career job and was losing money for having to sit in a room for extended hours, of course. But it is just one of those things in which you sack-up and take it like a man. You hate shopping with your woman or dinner with the in-laws? But you do it anyway. Gotta compromise somewhere...

I have yet to be called, but would do it. I work nights, so my employer would excuse me with pay.

Get home from jury duty, relax, eat, go to bed.... & get paid for it!
