The first one I ever bought was a Marlin just like that. I spent many of hours chasing “tree rats”. Fun little fun to shoot.

It’s crazy how reliable and accurate they are. They shouldn’t be that accurate for a semi but they are. Love mine.

Well I was rearranging things in the safe so figured I’d share. Marlin 833SS “tack driver”22 WMR with Vortex 3x9 Glass.
Before I got my CZ bolt action 223, this was my go to varment gun. It’s resume is impressive...squirrels:tree and ground, prairie dogs, crows, grouse, rabbits, and coyotes. And yes...I can still buy ammo for it...

.22 WMR is a good round. For pest/varmint control, it's hard to go back to .22LR after using the magnum. I have a few myself...

Here's a pair of CZ 512 Carbines in .22 WMR with sequential serial numbers. If anyone is considering a .22 Magnum semi, I highly recommend checking out a CZ 512. They're a bit unusual looking, but function and accuracy are excellent.

Since the subject of 'Magnum' rimfires came up, here's a rare one...a Czech made PPK/Brno 617. It is a .17 HMR semi-auto...

That is nice and I love 17’s. And own several CZ’s and love the quality of Czech guns...

Unfortunately I think I’m the one that started the recent conversation about 22mags in a 22lr thread...hahaha sorry. In my defense I was getting to the back of the safe to pull out a couple of older 22lr’s to clean up and take pics.

There are tons of debating vids on YouTube comparing the cz457 vs Tikka t1x. I haven't put my hands on neither one of them, which one would you consider buying as squirrel go to gun?

Not an Apple to Apple comparison, but I have a cz527 in 223 and absolutely love it. I know I know way too big for squirrels... Honestly I am impressed with the fit and finish, accuracy, and features of this gun I would definitely own one in any of the rimfire calibers.

Do you mean CZ 527 in .223? I have one as well, but it is the short-barreled carbine version with open sights. That maple is purdy.

I didn't know they made a maple stocked one, looks great. Good to see some love for the 527's. I have the mtr version in 223.

I've heard good and bad on both. I have not owned a T1x (yet), but have owned several CZs, and been quite pleased with all of them.

If you like to tinker, and I suspect you do, the CZ has more aftermarket bits available. I've had two 457s in .22 LR, and both shot great. The only reason I sold 457 #1 was to fund 457 #2. 'Number 2' is a 457 Varmint MTR that is currently wearing a Lothar Walther .17 HM2 barrel. That thing is bad medicine for squirrels. Are you hunting to eat, or eradicating pests?

I went back and edited...thanks for catching that...I was reading one thing and thinking another while writing...I almost bought the carbine version. It was in 7.62x39 though. The maple stock is what initially drew me to this rifle but after years of flawless functionality I can say that it’s beauty is definitely NOT just skin deep.

Did you put the barrel in yourself? If so how was the install?

Doing both. I was thinking of buying a regular 457 sport model and swap the barrel with Whistle Pig hex barrel.

Pretty simple. The key to remember is that in addition to removing the two barrel mounting screws, the magazine well screws (particularly the rear one) must also be loosened, or the barrel will be a bear to remove. I think the folks who've had problems are forgetting this step. The LW barrel is slightly oversized, but still slides in without any fuss. I didn't need a hammer, vise, or heat to install.

If you're eating them, I would stay away from the .17 HM2, unless you like bullet fragments in your stew. Like the .17 HMR, they expand violently on impact. At 50 yards or less, it pretty much cuts 'em in half. I have had crawl-offs with the .22LR...not so with the HM2.
If by 'sport model', you mean the basic 457 Synthetic, the barrel channel in the stock is huge...it will swallow just about any barrel you want to install.
