I just installed a Prinsu today and in the process of getting access to the inserts in the cab to screw it into (the ones taped/painted over), I removed the tape completely.

I’m assuming that is the bare metal of the cab under there? I did not do anything to protect that. Will that rust? Most install vids and even Prinsu just say “remove the tape.”

I can't recall whether I removed the tape or just created a hole in it to thread the bolts into the roof. I did replace the rubber strips after boring holes for the mounts and siliconed everything up very well when mounting the roof rack.

I should’ve just poked holes. That probably would’ve been safer.
I scraped the tape off and did seal everything with Lexel but areas that were once under tape are now exposed as the whole taped area isn’t sealed, just the holes and area around the spacers.

Is the cab of the new Tacoma’s even made of a material that will have penetrative rust anytime soon?

If you sealed it up well, you shouldn't have any issues and if you didn't, it is easy to pull the bolts and silicone them up well and reinsert.

I did seal them really well, but the space between the inserts where the tape was is exposed. It isn’t going to leak or anything, I’m more worried about the unpainted roof being exposed and rusting? Like if the paint was scratched through on the roof, it would rust right?

    here’s a pic:

I guess you could use some touch up paint. I would probably ask a body shop.

Yeah, I think my plan is to take the rack off, get the Lexel off, clean it good and stick some similar tape on there that was there to begin with. Then reinstall.
I was wondering if it wouldn’t rust though because I was seeing some people saying to just take the tape off like I did...

I pulled the entire rack off, got the rest of the adhesive and sealant I put on there off. Coated the whole area that was taped beforehand with Lexel and reinstalled the rack.

There is primer under the tape it seems, but I scratched the primer getting the tape off. So, the sealant should hopefully keep it rust-free for as long as I’ll enjoy this truck. Scratches are doused in Lexel now.
