Did I miss the memo on second gen resale value?

I know Tacomas hold their value well, but in the last few months I have seen multiple trucks with upwards of 150k miles selling for 15-16k, and actually selling. Are the second gens already entering 1st gen popularity or something?

The youngest 2nd gen is 7 model years old, the oldest 17. So yeah, they are in the phase of folks who look for older units to buy.

Not everyone cares about all the newfangled stuff on a 3rd gen that adds complexity, nor do they get excited over new prices and insurance rates.

So yeah, demand is up for clean examples. But all that said I do agree that the prices are nuts!

The prices reflect what people are willing to pay. Which seems to be a lot.
I'm always surprised at the prices of 2nd gen Tacomas. Everything else in the market depreciated but 2nd gens seem to hold their values like no other vehicle.

I think my prediction from almost 2 years ago is starting to come true.

I'm still going to laugh on the day when the 3rd gens are worth pennies on the dollar because most people want to go back to a 2nd gen and 2nd genners are like, "$30K? Nope not selling. You don't have enough money."

Toyota execs, "We can't sell any more of these 3rd gens. What are we going to do?" "How about if we put a 4.0L in it?" "Then we will have to admit our mistake, somebody will sue us, and then we will be forced to retrofit all those early 3rd gens with a 4.0L" "But Chrysler and Ford get away with selling crapy engines all the time. Got any other ideas?" "????"

Legitimately only things keeping me from buying a 3rd gen is the fugly giant pig nose, the anemic 3.5, and all the usless techno-wizardry.

I love the interiors, I love the ass end, cab is exactly the same.

I can live with the 2nd gen interior, but I want to drop a 3rd gen bed on my 2nd gen and call it a day.

I think the average person that buys a Tacoma doesn’t know squat about 2nd or 3rd gen.

A little of this and a little of that.
These trucks have always retained excellent re-sale value. It’s just one of the many reasons why we own them.

I prefer the look of the 2nd Gen's myself. The 3rd Gen's are nice, don't get me wrong, but when I think of Tacoma, I think of 2nd Gen. Perhaps that's just because I'm a little older, and the younger crowd will feel the same one day about the current models.

Toyota dealer is always sending me letters and emails wanting me to trade. Last summer they were offering me 16k on trade for a new SR5 DCLB. Now it's up to 22k. on anything. That for my 2013 with 98k miles. I just wonder what they would sell it for.

I've probably said it before, but I owned a 1st gen for five years, did little to it except keep it clean and maintained, and sold it for what I bought it for 5 years previous.. I have never had an experience like that selling a used car. That said I regretted selling that truck for years after!

It’s due to the lack of production this year, I could have gotten basically what I paid for my 17 if I wanted. My guess is prices are settling back out some.

I think that as amazing as 1st gens are, the 2nd gen trucks are just a better size for today's world and the fact that they have safety stuff like airbags and ABS makes them the better proposition for a used truck.

Every time I see the ugly nose on the 3rd gen, it makes me that much happier I got my 2013.

Me too. I think they nailed it with the 2nd Gen design; it's strong and iconic without trying too hard to scream "look at me".

Tomorrow is the 13th anniversary of buying mine. I don't believe that I'll ever sell it.

My 04 has just as many airbags as my dads 08. :notsure:

And I have ABS. But I dunno why thats a good thing to have anyways. Just a super annoying feature to have come winter time.

Oh, I stand corrected -- thanks. I was under the impression some of the older ones didn't have those things.

The super early 1st gens didnt have passenger airbags or ABS. But a lot of first genners on here remove the ABS entirely as its spot under the hood is perfect for a second battery.

Took my 09’ DCSB OR for a swim this spring totaling it. Had 139k on the odometer and a rough 139 at that. Insurance gave me $22k for it and wanted $6k buyback. Almost bought it back, but the water made me real nervous about electrical gremlins being a nagging problem.

The current market has gone crazy. Its not only 2nd gens that are getting huge used prices, 3rd gens are also. People are trading in 1-2 yr old tacomas for what they paid or more. Even new prices have have jumped $5-10k over the past year due to slowed production and demand still being there. I have no plans to ever sell my truck but I looked to see what was offered and was given an offer of $27k for my 4yr old truck with 75k miles. Not a bad offer at only $5k less than I paid 4 years ago.
