Footage of highway speed rear end impact for those interested (this was not my truck)

This is exactly why I quit riding a motorcycle years ago. Was a red light and guy slammed into the back of a car next me. Was like that’s it I’m done.

I see your point. It’s kind of like wearing hi-viz on a motorcycle for better visibility, but is 100% ineffective if other motorists aren’t studying the road.

 

Exactly. If the person in the Subaru didn't notice the sea of brake lights in front of them, they're unlikely to notice flashers.

 

Punish them if you want, but there is a big shortage of truck drivers. Driving truck isn’t easy and we put up with a lot of garbage out on the road, you wouldn’t even begin to understand.

 

It is hard to believe that the truck just crumpled.

 

It sounds like it's basically a shit job now. That doesn't really justify the amount of asshole driving I see regularly. Not that there aren't assholes in every kind of car out there. But, when driving is your job, you should be the safest drivers on the road.

 

Agree 100%, and the best way to have the safest truck drivers is to pay them by the hour. Everything from weather to heavy traffic, accidents, shippers and receivers holding drivers up, dictates to how a driver is going to make up for the money lost. Pay us by the hour and all the nonsense goes away.

 

I agree. I thought I heard that you're only allowed to drive 10 hours a day? That seems silly. At least it makes sense of why they're in such a hurry.

 

Actually when I’ve been on the Interstate and run up on stopped traffic I slow down and to me it’s a no brainer to check the mirrors to see if traffic is slowing behind me. At times I’ve put on my flashers if I’m not sure they’re slowing down especially in poor visibility weather.
Car driver was texting or doing something else more fun than driving, so unfortunately flashers weren’t gonna prevent Jack D. Squat in this case.

 

Every jurisdiction in this country, the law is pay attention when you drive....if you can’t see a double lane of stopped traffic you’re not going to see hazard lights. But seriously are you joking, come clean, was the purpose of your post to get a rise out of people, if so hats off...

 

Need to add a loud horn in the back of the truck tied to the brakes if you want to get Karen and Yolanda’s attention while they’re texting, can’t see lights looking down.

 

Drive 11 on duty for 14 total. I wish they cut it back to 12 hours total like they wanted to do. Problem is nobody wants to drive truck anymore especially with all this safety garbage they put in these trucks. You had to be a good driver before, and now you have to compensate for the truck trying to tell you how you have to drive. You can be driving along and have the brakes lock up because the computer malfunctioned, and it doesn’t matter what the road condition is. Tesla thinks they are going to build a truck that drives itself, might work in a desert with nobody around it, but not in the snowy states.

 

Hate to see things like this that are so avoidable.

 

I couldn’t imagine being a state trooper.

 

Hope the Tacoma driver is okay???

Its incredible how so many drivers just don't pay attention. I've seen some on their phone and almost rear-end or sideswipe another car, but luckily just look up at the last second. But then they're back on their phones again. Not learning a thing from their near miss.

I was going to reply to him but you summed it all up right there.

It appears that the vehicles had crested a hill under the bridge then had a long straight of way with both lanes full of obviously stopped vehicles- notice how many have the brake lights on, all of them except the black SUV several cars ahead of the Tacoma and he's only easing forward on the vehicle stopped in front of him. The Tacoma driver was essentially at a stop at the time of impact and the dash cam car was also almost at a stop and both did so over a noticeable distance, i.e. they did not panic brake or even hard brake indicating that they saw the problem in plenty of time, while the Subaru driver did not. The Subaru was still clearly at highway speed long after they should have seen the lines of vehicles in front of them and realized something was amiss. If you look at the movement of the truck after being struck, it actually bounces from the force of the impact as all of the junk in the back, including the bed, goes flying. It's common for the driver's foot to bounce or slip off of the pedals when struck. That's not to say the Tacoma driver may not have been distracted at the very moment of impact, but they were in no way at fault for this particular incident- the Subaru driver owns this one completely.

 

Turning your hazards when you hit 43mph, talk about living in the nanny state. Well at least if we seeing a bunch of people driving with their hazards on, we know where they’re from.

 

Thats pretty messed up. Truck drivers are a lifeline to 99% of everyone in some way or another. I do agree partially with part of your post but it should be everyone's job to be a good driver while on the road

 

Yes. And if they had better working conditions, maybe they wouldn't have to drive like maniacs to try to make a decent living.

I never excused anyone from having to pay attention and drive safely. I'm just saying that when driving literally is your job, you should be better at it than the average person.
