There's a bunch of good threads on here on how to do the swap, i dont remember if i did a detailed write up in my build thread. RST now sells a complete wiring kit for $170. The only "big" issues you'll have is if your truck is a manual. its also a good time to throw in a set of twin sticks from Front Range Offroad.

Thanks for the information @Usethe2nd and @Shadowhunter.

Mine is an automatic but from what I was seeing that does make it easier like you said. I like the idea of using the coin tray to host the twin sticks, Toyota’s at noon. Will let you all know what they say later.

Lol @Stick to your guns that was same day, same run, same photographer lol; his is white though haha you can barely tell.

The FJ swap only works for 6 cyl 2nd generations with the 6 speed manual of auto trans correct?

fj swaps work with all V6’s (maybe 4cyl, I’d have to look) auto/manual. You have to use the non AWD t case from the FJ. If you drop it into a 6spd you’ll have to swap over the front half of Tacoma’s tcase onto the FJ case(might have that backwards it’s been a few years since I’ve done it)

They’re guessing the t-case actuator. All electrical looks good from their continuity test. I need to double check my t-case oil too as I held off on draining since it seemed purely electrical. Also the t-case takes the most oil. They had another customer go through this on a newer 4Runner that has been a lemon. They did the actuator before finding a shit ton of shavings in the t-case. Luckily I checked that when I get home and I am good to go. No shavings in the transfer case drained it all just in case. There was glitter but not anything bigger than a millimeter. (Measured). One odd thing is that with all four tires jacked up only the driveline is spinning now, and before tires were as well. Another thread noted that when that happens it’s generally the front actuator. That was bench tested and runs good though (unless it just went bad).

TLDR; my question is it possible that because pushed my shift rod back to 2wd, and I slid my ADD sleeve back to 2wd would the symptoms present themselves differently than that diagnosis step? Toyota wants to do t-case actuator and then re-test the front, if everything was required $4000 out the door :O.

If anyone has a used t-case actuator I may want to buy it off you, maybe @bobsuruncle , I am thinking sourcing parts for the FJ t-case may take too long.

if your front driveshaft is spinning but the tires aren’t then your t case is stuck. If spinning the tires spins the driveshaft than your front disconnect is stuck. Just cause it bench tested fine doesn’t necessarily mean it works fine in the circuit since it has to have the interrupt internally working to know if it’s shifted far enough and what not.

Yep that's true, @Shadowhunter was telling me a story on that for his t-case actuator. Yeah so just checked on the ground and the front driveline will spin freely, with resistance so your t-case stuck comment makes sense. Guess I will still start there then, just onto the parts sourcing for that then too. Just to be clear, when you say your t-case is stuck, do you mean the case itself is stuck or just the actuator? Seems there was no shavings in there so I would be surprised if there was internal binding.

Yeah I’ve had the Tcase actuator fail and couldn’t get out of 4wd. Ended up just swapping a lower mileage tcase in to fix.

wow that’s wild that they’re almost the same as the actuator new from overseas lol. Used are pretty cheap too. Will look into this route too...

How much room do you have on the way up? If I changed my mind, would I be able to turn around? I've just gotten some new tires and gear and was planning on heading out this weekend, just poking around and checking places out.

There was room to turn around, traction boards will help in this matter.

Edit - there should be cell coverage there so if you need to call for backup that option should be available.

Cool, thanks for the info! Based on all the great advice from everybody on the forum, I've picked up some traction boards, straps, a come-along, and a compressor. I'm hoping this outing will be a lot less exciting than the last time I went out :D

I will probably need to use one when I get around to ordering the part and wanting to tear my truck apart again. Since I can't fit my truck in the garage I am hoping it will survive until it warms up in spring though because it is a bit cold to being working with metal in the driveway at the moment if it can be avoided.

Got a ride home. I need someone’s help to get my truck out and turned around. I made it up with chains and airing down. Winch/maxtrax would probably be best. I’ll pay you

I don't have a winch but I'm willing to help if I can. Have a set of maxtrax and a snatch strap. You are pretty deep so def need some help.
