I think it's about time to get some instructions posted again for how to update the VCM Scanner's channels configuration for datalogs. I really hate for folks to waste their time getting logs that are not useful for tuning purposes, so this should help a few of you out there and hopefully for folks in the future.

To get the logger setup to collect the data is a fairly straightforward process. However, setting up, customizing, and tailoring the layout of how that data is displayed in the VCM Scanner is something that takes a bit more work (but we can cover that later/another time).

The scanner comes pre-configured to record some very basic PID’s that are part of the OBD2 protocol’s universal SAE parameters. These are very basic scan-tool parameters that don’t give much in the way of detailed info. HPTuners has integrated the Toyota Enhanced PID’s which are found on Toyota’s TechStream software which is used by service department technicians for diagnostics/repair. These enhanced PID’s give an in-depth look into how the ECU is processing the various inputs/outputs but also reports them at a much higher polling rate. The improved sampling rate goes a long way in making sense of what’s happening inside the engine.

I’ve put together a list of pertinent parameters. The channels file that I’m attaching here (Techumesh.channels) will need to be saved to (/Documents/HP Tuners/VCM Scanner/Channels). Once the file is saved to that directory, you’ll open up the VCM Scanner, and then click on the channels tab on the upper left. That’ll open and you’ll see a list of PID’s that the Scanner will attempt to poll. If you already see that list, you can click on the little folder at the top of the channels list to open the Techumesh.channels file. Once you select and open the Techumesh.channels file, you should see the list of PID’s repopulate with new parameters. These are the Toyota Enhanced PID’s I mentioned about.

You will notice that many of the gauges and graphs on the right half of the screen will not report data immediately after changing the channels configuration. This is because the graphs/gauges are all linked to the default channels. Some time will need to be taken at some point to reconfigure those to use the new channels we’ve chosen. (More on that later..)

But to go ahead and start collecting data, you’ll simply need to connect the MPVI2 to the OBD2 port as if you were to flash the truck and connect the USB to the laptop. Stick the laptop in the passenger seat with the VCM Scanner open. Start the truck and then simply hit the ’spacer bar’. You’ll see a pop-up saying it’s connecting and all that Jazz. Once complete, you should see the channels list populate values in the 2nd column. You should see the current RPM, load, etc. streaming live. You’re able to go drive and let it collect data. To stop the datalog, you simply hit the ’space bar’ again and it will automatically save that drive. The datalogs are stored (/Documents/HP Tuners/VCM Scanner/Logs) and are listed by date/time.

You can email me directly the log file and I’ll be able to review it, use the data within to make any changes necessary to your baseline calibration, and send you back a revised file. At that point you can repeat the flash process and you’ve successfully loaded a revision.

Thanks, this helps immensely. What driving scenarios are most useful to capture for your tuning?

Depends on what we're trying to do.

Generally, some casual and spirited part throttle driving along with a WOT pull through 2nd and 3rd if you can do it safely will allow me get a pretty good picture of how things are running and where/what adjustments would be beneficial.

However, if you have some custom setup outside the norm (custom larger diameter intakes, turbo setup, etc.) I'll work with you one on one and explain exactly what is needed.

As soon as we're allowed to breath in close proximity to each other. :annoyed:

Soo..... the 4th gear hang is still hanging around....:rofl::rofl::annoyed:

BAH. Im thinking that this is due to something regarding the optimum torque tables that have been raised to get rid of torque management. Im tempted to change back to "v12" (as the hang wasnt around with this revision, but also according to my tunes didnt have modified torque table) but keep my current torque table to see if the 4th gear hang still occurs. Then go from there to see if messing with the optimum trans torque table helps.

Again for any who are experiencing the hang you can force an upshift by going from D to 4 back to D.

Keep me posted on this. I can assist if need to get into the trans torque table.

Yeah we should discuss. Trans torque table is a drastically different shaped table than others. Id like to see if I can capture the hang in a log... every single time it happens (and i can make it happen pretty reliably now) I never seem to be logging haha.

I have an idea.. If you have a "long" driving log send it over. The tune too as I believe you've tweaked your Optimum Engine Torque table slightly.

Optimum engine torque is very similar to yours but ill send it over. How long is a long driving log for you?

It's more to do with getting data on as many RPM/Load cells as possible. Longer the better as far as I'm concerned.

I'm going to send you a PM sometime today with an idea and an example of what I'm thinking.

Sounds good, I might be able to get a log of the hang today so we shall see!

    My shit is all stock.
Where are the tables to regulate the amount of leakage from my damned throwout bearing? Mine need tweaking.

Off the top of your head, do you know *roughly* what the throttle angle is, when the 4-5 shift hang occurs?

I had zero rev hang on this last 8hr round trip saturday ( i think im on v12 or 13). Kept a steady 70mph and let cruise do its thing up and down the hills.

Averaged just under 15mpg with 35s and stock gears too...

    You're on v11 w/ stock torque model.

You could use an update :)
