I'm sure they're fine. But, I don't think there's really any argument that a patch installed inside the tire is a bit more reliable.

I did some looking, and newer plugs are said to be ok for up 25K miles, according to one article. The old timey plugs were more of a temporary fix. So, they're a lot better now than they used to be.

Interesting. I probably put on about 30k miles on my plugged tires before i happily brought them to a recycling place. It was a bitch trying to plug an E load tire though haha.

I got those plugs in my taco as well, just in case. They could really save your ass.

I have one of those little plug kits in the garage, used them many times over the years with no problems.

Sure, a heavy duty tire will have 1 or maybe 2 more "plies". But not 10 or 8 or 6.

Contrary to MY DISbelief, a 10 ply tire actually has 10 Ply’s

    Inner plys we call breaker

    Well, super!

Like I said earlier, I carry a plug kit in the 4runner. I just don't consider it a permanent fix. It's my money, though, right?

Incorrect sir, its 10 ply Rated.
Google it if you dont believe me. I dont know how to screenshoot on my laptop. I thought the same thing before, but thats not the case.

I copied what google said: For example, an “Eload range indicates that a tire is equivalent to a 10-ply construction tire. In realitly, this tire is not built with 10 plies, but rather one or two plies of equivalent strength.

Edit: Thats why if you look on the sidewall of an E load tire, it will say 10 P.R. Meaning 10 ply rated.

    Yep, no argument there.

The best thing that i like about those plugs, its quicker than changing a flat tire.

You may be right. Might go off rating having the belted cord. I build Moto tires and we build what we call a 7-0 tire but consider the innerliner a “ply”. However most constructions are 3 plys and 2 breakers. It all varies. Some radial will run 2-3 plys and 2-3 breaker. Then we have jointless band race tires.
Anyways down in our PCR and LTR dept I know most carcass are 2-3 ply. I always assumed since we have 7 ply tires in moto, they ran more plys on the carcass when they built a 10 ply. I’ll have to find out for sure. I think they may consider the sidewall as part of the ply rating since it’s folded over

Interesting. And there i was arguing with a guy that builds tires:)

For the longest time i thought E load had 10 plies, C load had 6 plies etc, until someone on TW proved me otherwise, i was shocked haha! I actually learned a shit load of good info from TW, some really smart and knowledgeble dudes on here.

True! I have to remind myself of that occasionally when I find myself arguing about things that I'm not technically an expert on. Like tire plugs.

    Haha!

Off topic, but how do you like that KDSS suspension? My buddy always shits on it and i dont understand why. He never owned a 4runner with KDSS, but did a bunch of reading somewhere.

I haven’t been a tire builder very long. Only a couple of years. My background is in electrical and automotive. That being said there’s really a lot to know about tires and their construction. Also there is still a lot that I don’t know. And you just proved that lol. But thinking about it, it makes sense. Moto tires need that stiff sidewall for support. You really wouldn’t want a PCR tire like that. Maybe a LTR but it would be a rough ride.

So going off of the ratings of a 10 ply there’s still 5-6 plys on the contact patch (innerliner included)

Also thinking about it, I don’t think they even lay that many plys/breaker in our semi tires.

Dont waste your money on this piece of shit, the first time I used it, the plug insertion tool broke in half.
