Rear Diff leak

I got the dreaded rear diff leak on my 2018 TRD OR.

Tried searching for the last hour but I can’t seem to find the TSB.

Can someone help a brother out?

If its leaking, just take it in.

 

I think the TSB was for the 16 and 17 model years.

 

It’s “seeping” and I remember seeing the TSB before saying that seeping will still a warrants a fix.

I know my dealer is going to just send me on my way “saying seeping is not leaking” because that’s the kind of BS they’ve been shoveling.

Just doing my due dilly.

 

That was for a recall. I believe there’s was a TSB after that.

 

you are under warranty, most likely... so they will repair it, but the repair will simply be to replace the gasket on your diff and call it a day but at least that will restart the clock on a 1yr warranty on their repair. I've had to get my gasket replaced 2x now... latest one going on 8 months and no more seepage as of yet... the fact that it happened 2x though does lead me to believe I'll be doing it myself at some point when the dealer no longer covers this issue...

 

if that's the case, open a call with corp. mine as well as many others was just barely seeping (looked just like your pics) and they replaced the seal and all bolts.

 

My ‘18 had some damp spots around the diff seal as well. I cleaned it really well with brake kleen and it’s been dry as a bone ever since.

 

I just got my 17 fixed last week for the same thing, and looked similar to yours.

I think mine was worse sorta. I had more on the driveline side but nothing on the rear.


didnt have any problems getting it fixed and my vin#was supposedly unaffected.

oh edit: nvm just realized you sent the same pic from both sides.
mine was real similar and it got fixed no problems, I had a little bit more seepage but pretty close.

 

How long did they have your truck for?
Did they provide a loaner?

 

1 day, I guess 2 including the drop off day.

they offered me a loaner but it was a pain in the ass to get so I didnt take it. 50 dollar deductical have to turn it in by a certain time and pick it up by a certain time.

 

Well ... no matter, they changed the gasket and resealed it without any pushback when I showed them the weeping on mine.

 

My understanding is that recall on the diffs was for the Sport or SR5 models -- the ones that have the lighter diff without the locker/etc.

Mine (2016 OR) was a little weepy. I took it in to the dealership a few weeks ago. They replaced the gasket and changed the diff oil under warranty. TSB or not, a leaky diff will be a warranty issue!

 

Go! A fluid getting past a seal is a LEAK even if its "seepage" its leaking lol.

 

Funny, after all the posts I noticed mine is seeping too. It’s a 17 and never had a recall notice. The dealer said they will look at it, check the fluid and torque the nuts but no more.
That kind of sucks imo.

This happened to mine I took it to toyota they told me those were spots where water splashed and cleaned off the dirt

 

It's not a leak, nor would any other manufacturer repair that.

 

Mine was like that as well , cleaned it with brake clean and it’s been dry ever since.

 

Any of you seeing this running the breather mod or have the stock 1 way valve? Just curious if that makes any difference in this happening.

When I did my breather, I definitely heard a whoosh of air out so I don't think the stock one vents as well as it should.
