sorry I wasn't trying to make this a "dick contest".

i was just curious if you'd notice where it had come in from given that we'd been in bad situation as well and hadn't suffered as bad. It's obvious your door seals are well...cosmetic maybe at best now haha and I like the theory of the water pushing on the door. It was certainly pushing almost enough to move the whole truck.

    That is all.

    Moving on..

Sitting still or backing up is part of the key I think. If you're not sitting still, getting water in the back is hard (because you end up with an eddy back there and so the water is much lower).

I recommend not trying, hahaha. Not because of water in the cab - you can always dry that out. I really fear water in the engine, and then being stuck in the middle. The solution to that is to not travel alone I guess. :anonymous:

I'm going to have to disagree on the pressure thing. Our doors can't move enough from the additional pressure to "seal things up," and newer cars are much better sealed at the same water levels than our Tacos. The issue is weather stripping. Ours is 20 years old and (as your photo shows) falling apart. Newer cars just have better seals, and if we replaced ours, they'd work a lot better. That's my theory.

We weren't actually at door-handle water for any length of time. It was just fast moving.

Stupidest thing I've ever done. We've ever done.

Mike - those are some great shots; I've either forgotten about them or never seen them.

Not the deepest water though (for me anyway). That came in Afton Canyon at the end of the Mojave Road. 36" deep, and a water line much higher than we had in Capitol Reef. That was some scariness for me, as we slowly descended into it, solo truck. Also dumb, but not as dumb as the wash in hindsight.

    Looks so calm...

...but I was not calm as we sank lower and lower... this waterline has dried down a little, but you can see how slowly we were going since it's so straight across; trying to keep the bow wake off the hood; front fender still got a good wash!

+1, who cares. I don't. Your video was enough for me to call @mrs.turbodb over and show her. The "clunk" into the ice was insane. No damage from that, I hope? Oh, and I can tell you that when we were going through Afton, I'm sure I sounded a lot like Kirsten!

I don't have an answer for you, but I'm curious as to why you're pulling that out? I have a sense of the overall project you're working on, but still not sure why those would come out for that. Or maybe you're just cleaning while you're in there?

Do I win for the most [quote ]'s in a single reply? ;)

Nah the stub will wiggle a bit in the diff. But not a lot. If teeth are broke on the diff you'll hear it as it spins cause it'll grind up..if it spins at all.

Its more likely the ADD tube is shot or spider gears in the diff gave up the ghost.

That crossing at the end of the Mojave Road can get pretty deep, or at least it used to before it got filled in with rock earlier this year.

Before I had the snorkel on I crossed it and tried hugging the right side to keep the intake a little higher above the water line, right at the moment this photo shows is where I hit a rock or tree root under the water and thought I was going to flop my truck over.

    Screen Shot 2018-05-10 at 11.34.36 AM.jpg

I also experienced water through the door seals when this happened. Not a lot but it's the only time that's happened to me.

It's a shame that crossing is filled in now

i had to replace mine on my truck. the rubber wore off and made it so the door was always slightly open and could cause a rattle. drove me insane. finding a replacement wasn't fun either because earlier model tacomas have a completely different latch. i had one shipped over from a yard in alaska to los angeles.

Yeah water crossings can be sketch. I about lost my land cruiser in a river.

I only got one picture but this was before my snorkel and water came halfway up the windshield and was pouring in the AC vents. Scared me good.

Jeep JL and Duramax pulled me out with a kinetic rope and an extension strap too.

It ended up tweaking my ARB bumper too, but thats another story and my fault.

This VVVV The sound kit for most of the cab will wait for warmer temps but this door is going to get the treatment while I have access.

I am quite surprised I didn't break off my door handle this past trip. It got very stiff. It is almost impossible to open the door from the outside right now.

Gonna try and clean it up and maybe lubricate it, but after seeing all the fine dust coating in there, I am a little worried that any lubrication is going to get gummed up and I will be right back to square one in no time. Any suggestions?

Filled in, ehh? I mean, on the one hand that's a bummer because it'll mean more traffic, but on the other, I'm happy to hear it because I was always hesitant to head back up Afton b/c of that crossing. I'll be much happier to drive through something a bit shallower.

LOL, I've mixed up stabbing those buttons myself. I forget when the most recent time was exactly, but within the last 6mo for sure.

Makes sense. I was actually thinking I might try to clean mine a bit (I did my doors as you did when everything was apart and had the same OMG reaction when doing it :) ), but then I had the same thought as you - what if I just attract dust? My passenger side handle could use the most love right now. I'm considering compressed air for the time being.

I don't know all the details but from what I read a construction company working on the railroad tracks right near there filled it in, but without permission from the park service, so it's something of a controversy right now. Don't know if it will remain filled in or if they'll take the rocks out when they're done.

Are you taking off the door cover and cleaning from the inside each time? Or just spraying the latching mechanism from the outside?

You realize I am sure, that WD-40 is not really a lubricant. That it evaporates and stops 'lube-ing' in fairly short order.

I was thinking more along the lines of a thorough dousing of brake clean, followed by some PTFE based lube. :notsure:

    fuckin hell haha

Yeah best to split it. Had to see shit otherwise on the clamshell. Doesn't sound good.

yeah I remember it was stiff as hell when I drove it.

    Use the interior handle actually.

WD40 works great for me here as well. I cleaned it fully once but now I just hit it from the outside. Works good. Haven't had to do it in a long enough time to worry about it.

Where is @joshipps with his WD40 myth's posts? haha

    A QUESTION OF LUBRICATION
Myth: WD-40® Multi-Use Product is not really a lubricant.

Fact: While the “W-D” in WD-40® stands for Water Displacement, WD-40® Multi-Use Product is a unique, special blend of lubricants. The product’s formulation also contains anti-corrosion agents and ingredients for penetration, water displacement and soil removal.

even if it wasn't, then good. Like you said if it evaporates then dust won't stick around.

I am kind of amazed that spraying from the outside is enough.
