In my 2011 double cab OR, I put in a nice pioneer AVH 1440 Unit so I could have CarPlay and a Bluetooth and all. At the same time, I put in the ********* nicer speaker kit. I also have the idatalink Maestro that gives all the nice data. Super happy with it all.

Now I went ahead and ordered a ‘21 double cab OR, which has the base OR sound (option ED Audio Plus).

    - I understand the ‘21’s have CarPlay build in, so I feel like I don’t NEED to try and transfer the head unit. It is very likely better than the Toyota one, but, not sure it’s worth the hassle to swap it in the new one? Or even if it physically can be (seems like a wider shaped opening in the pictures I’ve seen?)

    - Think it’s worth bringing the taco tunes speaker kit over? I can certainly call and ask them, but curious if anyone knows if the 2nd gen kit I got can fit in 3rd gen. I thought I remembered installing some spacers they included to make it work.

    thanks!

The mids will fit. The tweeters won’t. The wiring adapters for the speakers won’t. If you got the amp, none of that will work with the current wiring. also if you don’t have an amp, prepare to lose volume if you hook up better speakers to the factory radio

    hope that helps

Live with the factory radio for a few before deciding what it needs is my advice.

thanks. Definitely going to try the factory head unit for a good while. Worst case, I can always add an amp in, if the TT speakers need more juice.

I reached out to them asking if the speaker adaptors and wire adaptors for the tweeters, fronts and rears could all transfer over to my 3rd Gen and then sent a link to a Tundra harness kit. Very confused.

Probably the connections are the same. Toyota uses basically the same stereo in several vehicle lines. Don’t worry about getting into this just yet, you’ll need to see the rear of the stereo before ordering anything anyway. Also, see this as an opportunity to get a better result for the same or less money because you’ve learned things, right?

The new stock radio sounds pretty okay with the exception of the bass response, which is boomy and flaccid. You also don’t get much for tuning it up, and the controls you have won’t address what it’s really needing. Since you will be coming from an aftermarket, you’ll probably miss the extra power as well.

Having dash speakers is the biggest difference you will notice. Moving the mids and highs into the dash is fairly transformative compared to the upper door location in the Gen 2 trucks.

What I’d recommend doing first is treating the doors. I’d say keep all of the TT stuff from your Gen 2 in case, but unless they can change the DSP settings, it’s probably not time aligned for the new speaker locations, and that’s not something I think you can adjust, one of the biggest reasons I don’t like the TT and OEM Audio+ systems is their total lack of user control, you just have to submit to what they have decided is best for your vehicle.

“You’re stupid, we tuned it for you. You are welcome.”

No thank you, I’ll have control of my stereo if you don’t mind. There are better options IMO, I’d let it go but it depends on what you are doing with the truck.

Trading it in? - Let it go
    Totaled? - Grab the stuff

Wow thanks for all the great info!

sorry for being slow with this but I don’t quite get why I’d need to see the rear of the new stereo before doing anything?

I am guessing they are the same clip type OEM connectors to the speakers, so wouldn’t I just unplug the new OEM speakers, then clip in the old TT clip-to-speaker spade connection wires to the new truck and hook up then we speakers? I may be forgetting if I needed to plug anything into the head unit, but I didn’t think so...just remember the clip connections in the doors.

curious if the tweeter mounting is the same. There are some little adapter ring things that I got with their kit to allow them to mount in my 2nd Gen doors. I know they moved them up to the dashboard in Gen 3

Ive seen several different plug configurations on the new stereos and it’s helpful to see what you have before trying to get some kind of interface harness. They aren’t $12 anymore.

Regarding the speaker connectors, yeah they should be the same.
