Some of the guys on the 4runner forum are the same. Generally guys that haven't actually researched it and confuse it with X-REAS that comes on the Limited.

It's brilliant for a weekend warrior. Improved cornering stability and better flex at the same time. I would buy it again, every time, unless I planned on removing the sway bars altogether.

Harbor freight is decent for a few things, but way to many people on here are buying everything from there.

I keep some cheap tools in the garage just in case l need to make a bastard tool for a task. That way I can cut, grind, or weld them into something that will work without fear versus tearing up some Snap On.

Actually they do* (if you are comparing SL to E). You can read the sidewall of the tire and it will list the number of plies. Now a 10 ply tire does not necessarily have to total to 10, but a tire is a sandwich and the more layers you add in the greater the ability to contain air and the more air, the higher the weight capacity.

It gets confusing counting the plies because you have plies that go different directions. This is a good example -

Would this be a 7 ply? 10ply? 5 ply? That is why they got away from counting plies because a tire like this has zero degree nylon cap consisting of 2 plies.

    * Now that may not necessarily be true between an D and E load range tire. They may have the same number of plies and could be the exact same tire because there is nothing stopping a tire manufacturer from putting a lower load range on a tire just for marketing purposes. In general, if a tire weighs more, it has more material. As I stated, more layers do not mean increased puncture resistance, but when you are talking penetration, the thicker the better when it comes to protection.

So the way the tire is constructed the first 2-3 plys usually run over the beads. When the beads are set the plys are turned up. The overhang in the plys makes up part of the sidewall. So they are counting the turn up of those ply’s, as more plys (double). However those aren’t on the contact patch. So the pic you sent should be a 3 plys carcass with 2 nylon breakers, and then 2 steel belted breakers. Officially only built with 7 plys plus the innerliner.

I’ll try and post some pics of the carcass and next time I’m building radial tires. I guess I can post some pics on a bias machine and you can still see how the turn up and carcass looks before the tread and sidewall is applied. I’d post a video but probably would get in trouble for that.

Bias is different than radial. The angle of the plies are different and if a bias runs a sidewall that’s additional to the tread it runs it on top of the treads (for Motorcycle) vs the sidewall on radial being on the carcass before the tread is applied. With radial the carcass is inflated while the “package” (breakers and tread) are being applied then stitched out while inflated. Bias it’s all done on a drum.

The new automated machines we have for PCR/LTR are pretty sweet. Here’s a video of one (not ours) however you can kinda see the construction and how fast it does it. The old process is using 2 different machines and 2 builders building each stage. First stage is the carcass (plys, beads, and sidewall) and the second stage (breakers, tread, and sidewall)

me too. although sometimes you need to double up on the plugs if one plug leaks other than that ive had great success and no catastrophic issues, if the plug leaks it usually will set off the TPMS alert or I usually check the PSI myself daily for a few days to see if its leaking

That machine is pretty impressive. I did a tour years ago of a cooper plant where they laid the tread by hand. I was amazed that the dexterity of the workers. They were basically machines. My Michelin tour wasn't quite as impressive. They showed us a building and said that we couldn't go inside.
