Just a tiny little bit at 11am and 11pm; Can’t remember the last time I actually had a white Christmas (possibly 2002)...

 

The saga of the snowblower is finally over! Got the Toro back and running good; However, the gear drive for the auger could possibly be on its way out...

 

See that black Lincoln Navigator in my neighbor's driveway? That is a loaner; He just leased a brand new Lincoln Corsair earlier this year, the damn thing has like 4,000 miles on it, and it's back at the dealer for its second or third warranty repair! This time there's something wrong with the sunroof (last time there was an issue with the fuel filler that caused the inside of the vehicle to smell like gas)…



I told him his next lease should be a Toyota!

It was flurrying when I left for work this morning!

 

I have a brand new OEM cruise control stalk, and I have the other parts I need on order at the dealer; I was just wondering if I needed a specific type of bolt or screw to secure the cruise control stalk to the clockspring, or if I could just bolts from Home Depot or something...?

 

Is it also possible that I could use bolts intended for use on another part of the truck? For example, I lost two of the bolts for the stereo bracket and was having no luck in finding exact replacements; When I changed out the taillights in September, I discovered that the bolts for the taillights and bolts for the stereo bracket were virtually identical! I got three of those bolts at the dealer (the service counter guy just gave them to me, I believe), and I put them in.

 

Technical answer: Yes, you need 2x 90080-15079 screws.

Realistic answer, no you'll be just fine with home depot screws just make sure you get ones that aren't too long wide or coarse etc.

 

Considering that I got the screws for the stereo bracket for free, I think I'll try the dealer first so there's no delays or surprises...

Another question that I would really like answered before the airbag removal is whether or not I need a specific clockspring from a high-end Tacoma, or if the cruise control stalk and be attached to the one that's already in there; My clockspring was replaced as part of a recall maybe three years ago...

 

If not (I kind of doubt they're a stock item) the appear to be m4 x 10mm 1.0 JIS head machine screws but that's judging by one grainy picture I saw.

And yes taillight and radio bolts are all m6 bolts, there's a lot of "reusable" bolts on Toyota's, Toyota likes to keep things simple.

The trouble comes in when you don't have the right GRADE of bolt. There's some m12 bolts on the Tacoma for example that are the same pitch and length but one might be a 5.8, where another could be a 10.9, if you used a grade 5.8 in place of a 10.9 you would have a very bad day when it broke, and it will.

But anything m6 and below is usually too small to really matter, they don't see load like a m14 transmission bolt would.

 

Can't really answer that one with confidence, some trucks are pre-wired some aren't, depends on how they handled the recall, I hope for your sake all the recalled clock springs got replaced with ones that are wired for Cruise.

The clockspring I'd need if I don't have the right one is $318 from the dealer, and I'm actually willing to pay that if I can't find suitable used one; I will only buy OEM!

 

Why not pull one from a salvage truck, or take the part number and plug it into Ebay? I used to sell parts at a Toyota dealership and I could sometimes find parts new in box all original for cheaper than even I could buy them from my own dealer with my discount.

I'm kind of "redboxed" myself but OEM isn't always the end all be all for all things.

Just saying, aftermarket isn't always bad.

your clockspring should be fine.

i would do this before doing anything. from what i read, a lot of single cab trucks after 09 or so did not come prewired for cruise control. very simple process to do

Testing for prewired condition of vehicle -

1.Place a small towel on the steering wheel just below the airbag.
2.Locate access holes on either side of the lower steering wheel cover. Take a Torx T-30 and unscrew the airbag.
(On some of the 2013-14, it is a spring clip at 3 points instead of two Torx bolts.) Lean the air bag forward gently
onto the towel but DO NOT UNPLUG IT.
3.So if you look at the fifth picture on the eBay listing, referring to the white 4 pin plug at top center and behind the black cable, the bottom 2 pins are empty. Take a piece of wire, or maybe an unbent paperclip, and with the key turned to the 'run' position, momentarily short the two pins to each other. There are three pins, and if you stay on this connector, you can't damage anything. If this makes the dash indicator light up, you know you're in a prewired vehicle.

So to recap. Expose the white 4 pin connector. Turn the key on to the run position. Put a wire jumper on the two bottom pins, but just for a moment. This should turn the indicator lamp on. Shorting it again momentarily turns the indicator back off
