Searched the forums but couldn’t really find a answer. Have a 04 taco double cab 3.4. Have all the parts basically coming but do I need a 4wd ecu with my conversion and a new wiring harness for trans and motor if I’m just using a j shift t-case with manual hubs? Heard some guys say you do and some that said it’s not necessary.

If the transfer case is manual then I’d not worry about a new ecu. The truck won’t know the difference.

Okay thats what I was thinking also. But others have told me differently. So my auto 2wd wiring harness will work with my 4wd transmission also?

I wound think so, when I converted my 2nd gen, the tranny was from a 4runner with 4wd and it bolted up and plugged in in all the same locations.

Okay. So you have the special snowflake 2003-2004 model year trucks. This makes the swap exceptionally more difficult because Toyota introduced the ETCS-I electronic throttle system in 2003. That means you can only use 2003 or 2004 transmissions with the electronic valve body. Any 1995-2002 A340F will NOT work with your truck. Or you can swap the valve body from your A340E to an A340F with the traditional kick down.

The ECU has nothing to do with the 4WD system if you’re using a j-shift case and manual hubs. The A340E connectors and sensors will plug into the A340F.

Okay thank you for the help. Did a lot of research and I’m just trying to get all the information on the 03-04 swaps before I dive into this conversion.:headbang:

So the 04 4wd trans I got should be just plug and play? And the manual j-shift tcase that I’m gonna use wouldnt require any wiring beside the speed sensor since I’m going with a differential with add that I’m gonna permanently have locked and use manual hubs?

As long as you get a 2003-2004 v6 A340F you should be good to go. The VSS you’ll have to extend the harness about 6” to reach the transfer case.
