I'm always surprised at the selection I get at my local exchange. Tax free too! Virginia...great for military! I picked up that little book for $90. I had no idea how much it costs market price!

So I would love to ask the whiskey pros here for some advice if I may. I have been tasked by my co-workers to buy a bottle of whiskey for the boss as a collective gift. I get the honor because they know I drink whiskey, but they don't seem to understand, I have drank nothing but Makers Mark mixed with water for 20 years. I buy a half gallon it every month, and it's mixed like a rum and coke, a tall glass filled with ice, 2 or 3 fingers of whiskey and fill the glass with water. I am no aficionado and have no idea on sipping whiskeys, it's not my thing AT ALL. It's only part of the gift, so it doesn't need to be some super expensive bottle, actually prefer it to be something on the more average side, maybe sub $80 a bottle/liter? That goes a long way here in NH... our State Liquor Stores are the best bargain going.

The boss doesn't know what he likes either, he mentioned it the other day that he would like to find a nice, smokey sipping whiskey. He's just starting his journey into good whiskey.

So the NH State Liquor Stores all have to list their prices publicly on everything they stock, so maybe this helps for showing what's available to me and how much it costs? I have 1046 whiskeys to choose from: https://www.liquorandwineoutlets.co...ceProducts=true&sub_type=Whiskey&OutOfStock=1

Does he have a category? Canadian, Scotch, Rye, Bourbon, Tennessee, Irish...

I mean, if he's looking for smokey that mostly narrows it down to Scotch. But if he's just starting to get into whiskey, the smokier scotches are sort of the deep end of the pool.

Hmm, that's a good question... he definitely mentioned wanting something smokey. Obviously I'm a bourbon guy. I don't know, I'm at a loss. I think it just might be a bottle of Elijah Craig or maybe WhistlePig, just because they are something I kinda know.

Well, if you can find it Eagle Rare is always popular. Michters, EH Taylor, Whistle Pig, Elijah Craig, are all good choices as well. Even some of the longer-aged stuff from 'budget' brands like Jim Beam (For $25--less in NH--I'm a huge fan of the JB Double Oak), Wild Turkey, and Evan Williams are pretty awesome these days.
One of the awesome things about the Bourbon movement lately is an abundance of great options. The downside is that sometimes it's hard to decide what to get.

I agree that you might not want to start him off with Lagavulin or similar extra smokey scotches. I think a good choice would be Oban 14 (scotch) or Hakushu 12 (Japanese whisky). Both have a slight smokey/briny taste but not overpowering. I personally can't do heavy smokey, but these two are among my favorites to drink.

I've been enjoying Larceny wheated bourbon and especially the barrel proof. What else should I try for a wheated bourbon or other wheated whiskey?

Makers Private Select and CS, Rebel Yell 10 year single barrel, and of course the requisite Weller lineup if you can find them. 1792 Sweet Wheat is another popular bottle - just grabbed one today. There's a wheated Woodford I think as well.

I'm trying to find out. It was posted on a local whiskey Facebook page. There's a lot of amusing guesses so far.
