I’ve done the Daytona 500 twice (93, 94). 400 once (91), Busch races (94, 18), and the Clash (17). I’d honestly prefer to see the road course race. Talladega is wider and provides more intense plate racing and is 1/3 the distance for me.

I grew up in Daytona, so I've been to more than a few races there. The pastor from my family's old church was Hal Marchman who did the invocation for years, so the youth group would pile into buses and head to the track. We camped out during the 24 hours too, which is probably where my love of sportscar racing comes from. I even got to see Dale Sr do the first practice laps after the lights were installed. They broadcast his radio chatter with Richard Childress. I think he did about 5 laps of solid commentary, then they started talking about their next fishing trip. I've watched that track grow from a press box with corrugated metal over the stands, to the Sprint Tower, to the new stadium, but every time I drive by I'm still in awe.

I worked for Americrown/ISC from early Jan '14 to May '15, so I got a good look at the behind the scenes of putting on the show, and it was impressive. Most of us would put in about 80 hours of work the week before the 500 and about 100 hours the week of, with another 60-80 the week after. The only other track I've been to was Martinsville, but I was so busy I didn't get to see a single lap of the race. I missed my chance to go to Talladega in '15 because my nephew was in ICU and no one thought he was going to make it. He did, but I missed the trip.

My brother has worked as a paramedic during the races the past few years and offered to get me tickets for the road course race in February. If the stars align I might be able to make it happen.

I'm tempted to go for the RC race but it's the week of my wife's birthday and I'd put myself in some hot, hot water (unless I take her).

The above image being from iRacing reminded me an interesting story. Way back in the days of Papyrus' NASCAR sim racing titles, there was a forum called Team Lightspeed (it may still exist, I have no idea). The people on that forum were responsible for most of the custom templates for painting cars to use in game and some of the most incredible paint schemes I've ever seen. One of the guys there did a Reese's Kevin Harvick car. He was contacted by RCR for permission to use his design on Harvick's car. IIRC, he ended up getting a design job at RCR.

This was also the same period when it was possible to end up in an online race with Dale Jr or Martin Truex Jr. I raced with Dale Jr once in an online truck race. Fucker put me in the wall as he was lapping me. Good times. lol

I personally like the yearly thread... keeps the conversation separated.

I had an idea... the NCAA thread had a tradition of doing jersey numbers with days to go... I figured we could do something similar with NASCAR numbers in history.

I'm gonna start with the current 47 as I don't really know any significant historical ones.

And... I know the Daytona 500 is a Cup thing... but I thought it would be cool to include GN and Truck.

Great idea. I'm going to go ahead and post number 46. Its a cool story to go with it. Jeff Gordon was supposed to run the 46 instead of the 24.

I wanted to add my 46 as well... as it was one of my favorite paint schemes of the 90s. ( All Sabco of the era really)

Sabco ran it 24 races in 1997 with Dallenbach Jr.
