More importantly what is the crossover freq set at?

 

Is that a parameter I set in the HU settings? High Pass filter?

I asked about the passive crossover now because I don't want to have to pull off the door skin later to change it because of the added sound deadening.

 

Check the specs on the speakers. If there isn't a switch on the crossover for that itself then it's a fixed frequency

 

Just so you know, the coverage I did - some % on the outer panel, and full coverage of the inner panel, was just following the instructions from RAAMAudio. My reading of their instructions was that the RAAMMat doesn't mess with the sound as much as the ensolite does - that's why you only put a little bit of ensolite behind the speakers.

But, I'm no Monte, so I'd follow whatever he says as far as audio goes.

The matt won't kill the sound. If anything it'll help. You won't be able to "over do" the matt really in a super negative way. You'll get diminishing returns at some point though and just be adding extra weight.

The ensolite stuff you do want to be careful of as it actually absorbs sound. The Matt just helps stop resonance mainly.

 

I know it would not be a truly sealed box, but completely covering all of the openings with mat, especially the big, main one, seems like it might be too much. Aren't speakers designed (or not) for sealed enclosures?

Some are yes but not all. And often performance is increased being in a sealed box.

 

The really nice expensive ones are designed for a box, and they make it known with all sorts of stickers on the speakers themselves and pamphlets explaining the volume needed for said box. But your average ones are not and often will be reduced in output and frequency reproduction in a box.

 

I wouldn't agree with that. But i supposed it will also depend on your subjective view on "better" when it comes to sound.

 

I feel like having almost any conversation about sound quality inside a 1st gen is meaningless. It takes relatively big jumps in quality to pick up any difference inside our cabs.

 

Does yours sound that bad? Mine doesn't, and it's a pretty damn simple setup. Not as good as what I setup in the cruiser, but also 1/8 the price

 

That’s exactly my point. A reasonably cheap set up can sound just fine, and the acoustics of a Tacoma cab are such that a better set up isn’t going to sound all that much better.

No matter how much sound deadening you put in one of these things, there’s no getting over a) that it’s a car and b) that it is a 20-year-old car.

And all we’re really talking about is a little more or less mat on an inner door skin. The floor, back wall, roof, glass are all going to make much more difference.

 

Eh. It's all subjective anyways(as all things are). Im sure if you wanted to you could make it sound pretty damn good. Is it worth it? Idk. Maybe for someone.

 

I would not call myself an audiophile, but I definitely appreciate a good sounding system.

 

as long as it covers up all of the noises the truck makes, its a good sounding system

 

Naw, Monte is an audiophile, I am not. I just like the tunes to sound good.

Ya. quality is pretty low on the list of things i care about when listening to music. $20 skull candys are perfectly sufficient. could never ever tell if its "compressed".
