Gonna buy a 2011 OR TRD tacoma soon I hope. Been reading up on all the diff traction contol systems. Can you use the Atrac and the lock rear diff at the same time?

Thought I read some where that you can only under 3 mph.

If not I would like to do the mod that will make Atrac avalible at the same time as rear locker.

You can use them at the same time, however when locked you can't exceed 5mph. The locker should only be used to get un-stuck.

A-trac comes on automatically on my truck when I switch to 4-low, you can use both a track and rear locker when in 4-low. :)

Where's David, he'll school you

The part about not exceeding 5 mph is what concerns me. That makes since in rock crawling type situations where slow is better but in mud it you often need to move a little faster. If you go over 5 mph with diff lock in 4low the atrac just shuts off automatically?

It come on automatically because you leave the switch in the on position, and 4 lo activates it.

DUDE didn't you read my post to you yesterday in another thread about the SAME subject????

For the OP: just opened my manual page 182, which states:

''WHEN THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL IS LOCKED (VEHICLES WITH THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL LOCK SYSTEM)

The active traction control system is activated only when the vehicle speed is less than 3MPH (6 KMH)''

You can go as fast as you want with the diff locked. But A-TRAC will be active only under 3MPH.

I think the others, by printing what is in the manual (don't you have one?), have addressed this.

But, to try and answer what you are asking or why you are asking... here's my way of helping:

DON'T LOCK THE REAR DIFF. !

USE THE A-TRAC, the A-TRAC will be with you always (Obi-Wan Kanobi voice).

Otherwise: Use either the rear locker or the A-TRAC... As stated once you reach 3 mph while locked, the A-TRAC disengages.

The rear locker will give you three drive wheels... both in back, and the one with the least traction in front... So, if one front tire is in mush or in the air... only your back tires will be driving you at that moment.

The A-TRAC will give you drive with any traction tire or all 4 wheels that have traction. If both tires on the axle are in mush, then they will both turn the same... If one tire is in mush, then it will not spin away but instead will be matched to the traction tire.

A-TRAC and the locker together don't provide more traction, but simply a bit less noise if the A-TRAC only comes on when you start to get stuck, then over 3 mph relies on the locked rear to continue.

    A-TRAC for über traction control!

I agree with David here. But I would like to add that it makes sense to lockup the rear diff if you're on a very rocky or dicey section of trail where any wheel spin/slip may present some danger. A-TRAC on the front diff and locked in the rear works very well for the crux of some very tough trails.

I turn everything on just for the hell of it! Even the downhill assist when I am driving on level ground!

Locker+ATRAC gives the tacoma its highest traction capability.

Locker is not suggested over 5mph because the chance for loss of vehicle control is higher with the rear end locked.

I lock the rear diff and treat the A trac like my locking front diff.

A-TRAC has no speed limit... something to consider when wheeling. Try the A-TRAC alone and compare to where you used rear lockers before.. I did and found the A-TRAC alone did everything that I used to use the rear locker on.

It is great to have both... but might as well compare one over the other since you can. Someday Toyota may do away with the rear locker once enough people and magazine writers learn and experience the A-TRAC.

Until that day, the Rear Locker will be on the TRD Off Road because that's what we off road drivers are asking for.

Sort of like why they put a fake hood scoop on the Sport TRD... it doesn't do anything, but there are some people who like it on there.:)

That is a fair enough reason... the locked wheels in back won't periodically check the rotation speed at slip a bit doing so...?

ATRAC is great but I still just go straight for the locker. ATRAC takes all the fun out of it.
