Not horrible for a tax paying shop. Take it to a transmission shop as they can prob handle the job better. Make sure they know that the front diff stub shaft has to be tranfered over from the old diff to the new diff.

Loving my 5.29. Did a trip in March from Socal to Moab and couldn't stand the stock gears. Did the same trip last month and it was night and day difference!

    Definitely recommend!

I couldn’t find any BF sales on 5.29 gears, where did you order your set from? Local 4 wheel parts quoted me front and rear for 3300 because I have an e locker. Sounds a little on the steep end.

Nitro gear had 15% off for Black Friday. Since I’m in Washington I figured I’d pull the trigger to have them install it too.

I got mine from ECGS, only 10% off, but the base price was lower than direct from Nitro and the total cost ended up lower.

Edit: $3300 sounds pricey, even with installation. I'm looking at ~$2500 installed, and I'm adding the solid spacers in front and rear, and the ECGS bushing up front. I have the elocker as well, I'm not changing that, or adding a locker in front.

I just got my Tacoma last month. I want to re-gear to 5.29 but my tacoma right now is 100% stock with a RetraxOne cover. Will this hurt my taco? Only reason I want 5.29 is because I ordered the uptop bed rack, steel skids from CBI which should be coming in hopefully in a week or two. I plan to get a RTT and steel sliders in January. Wheels, 33 inch tires, and new suspension will be about 6-9 months I'll upgrade after I use beat them up a little. Then after a year or so I'll get the front and back bumpers.

Sorry if it's a stupid question. This is my first truck, only owned sports cars before

Hurt your Taco? What do you mean? Changing gears will not permanently hurt anything, with $ you can change back. Make sure they save the parts! Just costs $.

Seriously, maybe the worst risk is a crappy shop does a lousy job, gears get munched, again $.

Never heard of anyone with serious regret, but drive your truck. If it goes fine for you, then don't change the diff gears. I think most people know what they need, this isn't an appearance mod that's for sure.

Ok got it, thanks. I thought I'd mess it up because alot of the stuff I been reading it says don't change gears until you have tires 33 inches up or a bunch of weight added.

Between the stock ECU/TCU software and living at altitude with heavy tires it was too much for the stock gearing and software so I re-geared and have almost zero regrets. I like my 4.88's but wonder if I would have preferred 5.29's oh and the cost isn't exactly trivial.

About the only "issue" I can think of is the pinion gear gets smaller as you go higher in ratio so maybe the pinion could be a little more prone to damage in extreme situations.

Ok, so made the jump. Jan 11 i will be joining the club. I know, joining late. A few questions for the wise, I have 265/75/16s with a snug top, rock sliders, soon to be aluminum front bumper with winch, roof racks etc. I am going to up the tire sizes to 285/75s when tred runs thin but will I have any problems before then?

Problems, no. But it may be annoying till you upgrade tire sizes.

Prone to damage? No more than any other pinion really. How many cases have you ever read that a pinion broke because the gear ratio was so low?

This is about where I am...sans the rock sliders. Notable higher RPM's when running the AZ highways above 70mph...about 2500 rpm's at 75mph...which will be solved when I up the tire size to 285's.

Around town I have been averaging 18-18.5 mpg, and would expect that to improve with the larger tires/lower RPM's once I make that switch.

Just had the initial break in diff fluid drain/fill (at 911 miles, ooops) and it is all smooth sailing with the 5.29's, sans some gear whine on deceleration...I just turn up the Queens of the Stone Age and rock on...:headbang:
