Took the truck out for some camping last week to Palo Duro Canyon State Park (near Amarillo, TX). Figured it would be interesting to check the weight on this truck fully laden with me, fuel, water, supplies, etc.

Short version: Weighed in at 5820lbs....yikes. GVWR is 5600lbs.

I have done a few things like upgrading the suspension, adding a bed rack (which is now for sale), drawers and a fridge. I figured I had it pretty far up there but no idea I had already gone over. It is a DCLB which is already the heaviest version as well. You can see more of the build at https://www.buildstring.com/build/aEhtQi9K2tljTpIw6lHk

I can probably pack a bit less and I did have a bit of unnecessary recovery stuff on board. However, I haven't added things like bumpers, skip plates and sliders. I can't imagine how heavy some of the other builds out there are.

My 96 LC weighs 5745 bumper, armour, sliders, rear drawers and 85lb spare. Your truck seems dangerously heavy.

This is the closest I have but you'll need to add a couple storage containers in the back.

    IMG_0359-2.jpg

As I mentioned in the original post, it included me @200lbs. However, I did not have a passenger.

Lol... I’ve wondered about that from time to time. I’ve never weighed in without my trailer but I imagine I’m close to or over 6k fully loaded for family camping.

what I’m really curious about is what defines gvwr. I suspect it’s really the brakes, and stopping distances, especially once you’ve tossed the pathetic springs, especially the rear leaf packs.

Come to think about it... curb weight bone stock is 4800lbs. My family of 4 weighs 450 lbs. If that gvwr was a real problem, there’d be Tacoma’s piled up in junkyards by the thousands.

Me too. I have upgraded the Suspension (Icon Stage 6) and gears (Nitro 5.29). However the brakes are stock and so are the axles and chassis. The truck handled the weight just fine and I am, technically, not overloading any particular axle but I don't believe an insurance company would really care about those details if something were to go horribly, horribly wrong. :)

It is definitely overweight (based on GVWR) but it handled that just fine. The weight is low (not on top of a roof or rack) so it kind of just went along. I have upgraded the gears and suspension, so it moved it all pretty well. At no point did it feel sketchy or dangerous but I will trying to get that weight down for sure. I don't care for it being over GVWR even if the truck feels fine while handling it.

Yeh definitely try and reduce the weight. To be safer I'd get larger diameter sway bars.

I’ll give the boring answer. The sticker on the door.

that’s not being snarky and sarcastic. If you end up t boning someone who pulled out on you and the argument is “you should have had time to stop”, etc, if they find out you’re over your vehicle rated GVWR you can get boned by insurance and lawsuits.

    I’m fun at parties.

Boring but true. I believe you can get GVM upgrades in Australia through some official processes but I haven't heard of anything like that in the US for passenger vehicles. (https://oldmanemu.com.au/products/gvm-upgrades/)

Har har.... I mean, “with regard to what mode of failure do they arrive at said number”.

Remember when Ford explorers came with tires that could barely carry thier curb wieght? It was a nightmare for Firestone.

oh yeah I know all that. I’m assuming it’s some distance from bump stops as measured from the factory. Which is why an equivalent air bagged vehicle from the production line is rated for more.

BTW, it was pretty easy to get it figured out. Cost $12 and it helped to setup up a payment system beforehand to make it all go smoothly at the scale but those CAT scales are everywhere in the US and the mobile apps make it fairly seamless. You can find videos on YouTube that walk you through the process. Lots of folks weighing their RV's.

What does your wheel / tire combo weigh? One of my employees has a set that has to have added 100+ to his rig - and it's simply resting on the ground, not the truck.

I figure the scales at the local trash dump are close enough for my curiosity level.

But that is cool. If there was one closer than 50 miles I might actually be curious enough to pay the 12 bucks

    5x SCS Stealth 6 16x 8 (~100lbs)
    5x BFG K02 285/75/R16 (~285-300LBS)
    Total: ~400lbs

I'm not sure what the stock setup (and spare) weighs but that upgrade has assuredly played a role in the increased weight.

If the dump charges, that scale is regulated, state tested, and technically spot on.
