    I will chime in here.

    I will be producing "ute style trays" coming into the new year.

    So yes, I started with what is a "Ute Ltd. Tray". I wanted to see if this would work with what I had envisioned.

    The price tag that I put of $9,000 CDN, is an entirely new, ground up design, that is superior of the Ute Ltd. I should have been more clear in my posting, but it was mainly to gauge interest and idea of what peoples reactions would be.

    Yes Ute Ltd trays are around $4,000+ CDN mark. But you still have to add lighting, wiring, bumper, and so forth. It's easy to install, but so will be our production model. The biggest addition to our trays/decks, will be modularity. You can purchase tool boxes, water tank, and a drawer system at any time. Does not have to be done on the initial purchase of the deck.

    I'll make a post on TW forum here momentarily as well.

    i don't personally use facebook so i myself wasn't able to see what the tray looks like compared to the one @tacoma16 has or what other information that link shows since the facebook group is private. so i look forward to seeing the post you make for it :D

    $9000 sounds like a step price, but would that be installation as well?
    but as you mentioned, if the other options are missing a portion of the items like the bumper, then it sounds like a better price overall, especially over the first iteration of the tray, again - i look forward to seeing more info on what you have to offer all around. Since watching the 4wd adventure guys, i started to like the idea of a flatbed/ tray.

    oh didn't know there was an entire build thread for this @tacoma16 ....

    now i have something to read :p

    I have created a thread that I will continue to update as we progress;

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...rays-for-midsize-trucks.698619/#post-24730398

    That being said, here's the section of information to understand the price;

    Key features about our design that will catch your attention;
    • All aluminum construction
    • Manufactured and designed right here in Canada
    • Stainless steel fasteners, hinges, latches and tie downs
    • Easily removable side boards
    • Headboard with dual tire carry functionality
    • Modularity, tool boxes, drawers, water tank; can always be added and don't have to be purchased with the initial tray
    • Plug and play wiring
    • Easy installation, can be done in your driveway with the help of a friend
    • Shipping throughout North America
    • Canopy integration (ETA late spring)
    Since everyone asks, we set out our pricing at $9,000 CDN. This includes the following;
    • The base tray, with interior and exterior tie downs
    • Fold up side boards
    • Rear LED lighting, plug and play connection
    • One piece, left and right fenders with mud flaps
    • Trailer connector relocation
    • Back-up camera and sensor relocation
    • Bed plug relocation
    • Tool box, water tank and drawer ready
    • Dual tire mounted head board integration

    As far as installation goes, that price does include installation. These can be done at home, in your driveway, with the help of a friend. Since it would be tough to lift the deck by yourself, not due to weight (as it is very lightweight), but just size wise would be awkward for one person to handle. Or use a forklift or crane, that works too!

    I hope this helps :canada:

    seems like material costs have added up to it. the 9k price tag with your break down makes more sense now. It’s crazy how shit adds up so quickly. And includes install! Shit makes even more sense now. I will advocate that driveway installs are possible. Lol did that! If you need a shitty comparison of a home brewed job, just show them my build lol.

    I will say that your stuff looks a hell of a lot better then what I came up with and also appears stronger then the shitty ARE cap I got. Finishing off the original bed is a pain and you definitely did a great job!

    in terms of pricing it is extremely competitive with companies like nor weld. Blows them out of the water!

    Glad that it does make sense that way, because we didn't think we were out to lunch when comparing to other brands.

    I myself installed that Ute Tray in the driveway, and that's exactly what I wanted to maintain in the production model! The fact that our product will be like an IKEA kit and can easily be done at home.

    I'd say you did a great job on getting it done all at home! At the end of the day, piggy backing on another product proved to be more difficult, and it just made sense to design and build our own from the ground up!

    The main premise of our product is that you don't have to buy a complete package. The $9,000 gets you to exploring and canopy ready. It allows you to customize it as you see fit. Something the Ute Tray definitely did not allow. Add the tool boxes, drawer or water tank as you need them, and they can be very easily added to the tray whenever down the road. That was our main focus. We're working on something potentially simpler, with less features, just trying to figure that out. So that there is a sub $9,000 option available that way then in the future.

    Guys please fill me in on something.
    Why is this better than the stock bed with a cap.
    When it comes to overlanding. Wheeling. As a work truck and security how can this compare. Not to mention the weather.
    And then there is the mto.....

    Often the discussion has come up in regards to MTO. In basic terms, yes you require the yellow sticker and then you're 100% in the clear, but that being said. No MTO or OPP is going to stop you and say your truck is now commercial because of the flat deck, simply because it's a midsize truck. You just don't attract that kind of attention with a mid-size.

    The other part of this, I'm looking at taking this to the MTO and seeing what can be done to exempt mid-size trucks entirely of this. With a GVWR already under their specified numbers in the regulations, why does it matter if the mid-size trucks have a deck or not.

    As for camping, wheeling, overlanding;

    I have been doing so many trips over the past couple of years, and I got tired of climbing in the bed to grab things and reaching over the side, around my bed rack to gain access either. I thought about getting a bed cap, mounting my tent to it, and then getting a drawer slide too. But by the time I was done doing all the math on the costs, a tray and canopy just made more sense. To me, if I'm already spending that kind of money, might as well jump a little further.

    The canopies will be wind off, with 4 jacks like a slide in camper. Installs with 4 simple bolts, and then come Sunday, maybe 20 mins to remove the whole system, boom. Ready to go for the daily tasks and work week. With these you can store all your equipment, from your fridge, to camping gear and even a full kitchen!

    As for weather. Everything is tightly sealed with a thick rubber seal, just like on your trucks cabin doors. Dry and free of dust.

    The additional benefit is usable space. You can now easily transport an ATV or snowmobile, unlike with the stock bed. Sure it's doable, but it's not ideal. And if you have a long bed truck, you can use the 3 ft canopy and park your ATV up from the side. Couldn't do that with a stock box.

    I wish I had done this years ago when I had the 2014 Tacoma. The amount of user friendliness this provides is substantial.

    Lastly, suspension. I do recommend at least the medium load OME springs for just the tray. Ideally, Dobinson makes a much stronger spring, and that I will run once I have the canopy installed.

    In my eyes, if a Hilux can do this, so can we. The Australians were onto something when they started these way back, so why not bring that here. It'll make life so much easier for those who really want to get the most out of their mid-size truck. Since at the end of the day, a mid-size is more friendly with its size in both the city and off-road.

    There's plenty in the works, so I don't want to spill all the excitement too soon either.

    At the end of the day, I know it won't be for everyone, but for some, it's exactly what they need.

    No it all makes sense. I was at first very surprised by the price based on how much I paid for everything. Again though, I did forget a lot of messing around, sourcing and general figuring shit out.....to cap it all off I’m not done...so for 9k if I could go back in time I would. Did you figure anything out that’s fancy for the filler neck? May be interested.

    I've spent many hours sourcing quality parts, from the aluminum itself, to the electrical, lighting (still not 100% if we're going this route as pictured on the prototype), and on and on it goes. Coming to the conclusion, of a system that can be installed at home, all just plug and play, nut and bolt.

    As for the filler neck, I want to use the OEM filler and to do what I did, and include the necessary parts for a customer to do the work themselves, or as additional option, include a ready to go filler system from us.

    Either way there's enough space to do what I did before, and simply run it again, but I would prefer something with a cleaner, more factory finish. Question is, what the third line is... One is the filler, obviously, the 1/4" line appears to be a vent tube, and the third looks like EVAP maybe? But I'd like to talk with a Toyota specialist on that one, and how I can make it work. So that's the last hurtle. Additionally, I have to find something that works for Ford, Chevy and GMC as well...

    As seen in my post from the Ute Tray install;

    Fuel System Filler Extension

    This will come down to personal preference. I personally wanted the deck as close to the cab as reasonably possible. So I used roughly 2ft of hoses to extend these upwards. The end result is super clean and I’m extremely happy with it. Hose measurements are inside diameter. I picked up the following;
    • 2.5” Exhaust Clamp
    • 3ft, 1” Fuel Line
    • 3ft, 5/8” Fuel Line
    • 3ft, 1/4” Fuel Line
    • Hose clamps to match the above hoses

    Thank you for Taking the time to explain
    and clarify.

    I use my truck 7 days a week.
    Daily driver and weekend wheeler
    And some light property maintenance
    Also the odd moving this and that.
    I see the setups from Australia on u tube have a fully enclosed "pod" for lack of a better word and that would suite me just fine. But an open tray...
    Not for me.

    Again this is very interesting and will keep up with it.
    Thanks.
