2020 Did Toyota change glass spec

When the Japanese came in to teach us Kaizen, the "Continuous Improvement" was not in the final product, the improvements were in the elimination of parts, tasks, and cycle time. When I see Threads on here saying things were eliminated from the truck like the A Pillar grab handle, the storage box in the bed, the glovebox tray, the loops from the rear seats, Kaizen immediately comes to mind.

I saw this same thing when I was looking at purchasing...fake news. It’s second hand info from reps with talking points they use year after year - I deal with them at work every single day the vast majority aren’t even remotely experts they are people that did online trainings or attended a meeting and typically aren’t even employed by Toyota even though they are told to say they are because Toyota pays the company that pays them. I have dealt with situations where managers 2-3 levels above a rep are misinforming hundreds of them. In fact the managers are usually the source of all the misinformation.

It's one of those stupid, personal things for me. If this is how it is, I'll forget about it. But if there's a way to cut the side wind noise, I've got to have it.

I have a 2019 OR AT DCSB. A friend and I were on a long highway trip, and he thought the engine and road noise were quieter than his father in law's earlier third-gen (he didn't know the year). He didn't have an opinion on wind noise.

 

I never saw this video, but the first time I read about it was on the Edmunds site.

 

I came from a very quiet 14 GMC Sierra . The first thing I noticed with the Tacoma was how light and easy the door was to close .

 

Ya I mean the interior plastics were scratching within a week and vibrating apart, but damn that think was silent even on the highway.

 

For the US/Canada market, there have been 3 windshields used in the Tacoma starting in the 2016 model year. The 2016-2017 with GoPro mount and without TSS (56101-04060), 2018 production with GoPro mount and with TSS (56101-04080, 04081), and 2019-2020 without GoPro mount and with TSS (56101-04082).

All of these Tacoma windshields include "acoustic glass," which is an accoustic vinyl interlayer used in the lamination process for the Tacoma's windshield. Not all Toyotas use this, but the Tacoma has since 2016. I'm not aware of any changes to these windshields beyond the GoPro/TSS differences.

The front side windows, glass runs, and interior weatherstripping did change between 2018 and 2019, though I haven't measured it to see what the actual difference is. There was an actual change for the front side door glass, but what that change was I couldn't speculate on without doing more research. Nothing changed for the rear doors or back glass beyond some changes to which tint levels were offered.

Kaizen embodies a lot of what Toyota strives to do, from the engineering, design, manufacturing and is even pushed at the dealer level.

Trucks don’t make much noise when they are broken down.

 

I did measurements on the thickness of the Tacoma windows with a caliper. My brother has a 2018 Tacoma and I have a 2020 Tacoma. The 2020 Tacoma has thicker windows in the front than the 2018 Tacoma. Here are the measurements.

2018 Tacoma: Front door windows 4mm, Back door windows 3mm, Back sliding glass window 3mm

2020 Tacoma: Front door windows 5mm, Back door windows 3mm, Back sliding glass window 3mm

this is purely anecdotal, but this thread gives me a chance to whine, my 2020 that i picked up three weeks ago, got a nice chip in the windshield the first week. Right in front of driver, so I get to see it, at all times

My 2020 cab is still noisy - don’t see any difference from my 2013. Just upgraded my sound system to drown out not so quiet cab. Haha

 

This is probably the only complaint I have about my 2020 that I wasn’t expecting before purchase(lack of power with the 4cyl, crummy speakers, no lumbar support in the SR I knew with the test drive). My budget and desire for another Toyota truck allowed me to look past these minor-to me anyways- shortcomings.

I find myself constantly looking around for where the wind noises are coming from. It seems the rear access area must have some drafts. Maybe the reverse doors and rear slider have design problems? Maybe it’s the glass itself? Either way, like others I just turn the radio up and grin from ear to ear enjoying the nicest vehicle I’ve ever had!

 

When you upgraded the speakers did you add sound damping material to the inner doors? That reduces a lot of exterior road and truck noise. I also recently bought the OEM Tacoma TRD Pro rubber mats and they further acted as sound damping material and greatly quieted my truck. They are so rubbery that sound dies trying to get through them.

 

Rear wall too. Super easy and made a big difference.

Was putting in a sub so I had the rear of the cab apart anyway. (Taking it apart is super easy). Just apply this Noico sound deadening mat. It sticks to the walls. Cut holes where need be with a razor. 10 ft.² is perfect for the rear wall.
