I replaced the original calipers on my 2010 about 2 months ago. Original had 2 cotter pins, new calipers have 1 cotter pin. Other than the cotter pins, the function /design looks the same to me. I haven't had any issues with the new 1 cotter pin calipers.

Toyota used two pins for 2005-2012 trucks, and changed to a single pin for 2013-onwards (change occurred in July, 2012).

OP the shaking/shuddering you mentioned may be a rotor pulsation. How old are the rotors? OEM?

thats whats so weird for me...my stock calipers (which I ran for 355k miles) were the two cotter pin type
when I replaced my calipers, the new ones had the singular cotter that ties both glide pins together
maybe, as you stated, I need to go back to individual pins for each glide

I replaced them with brand new rotors (purchased at the dealer for $75 each)
whenever I do front brakes I put on brand new pads & brand new rotors

Are you worried about one design over the other? Or just curious about why it changed?

Either style pin is fine, not really an issue worth worrying about

    Mine are like this.
Each slide pin has its own small cotter key.

Perhaps it's a new design. Remember those cotters singular and primary function is to keep the pins from backing out and ultimately falling off the calipers and brake pads so as long as there is some sort of way of securing them in place who cares.

I think you are too fixated one these cotter pins that have nothing whatsoever to do with your problem.

Did you even look into bedding the brake pads?

I'm going to assume the answer is no.

Give it a shot. It will probably cure your issue and it cost zero dollars.

    I did this too!

*Er... The safety wire, not the installing the pads backwards, though doing that may make the pad material last longer...

When I put the TRD 4Runner brakes on the single Tacoma pin spring wasn't long enough so I ordered the 4Runner Pro kit amd safety wired the slide pins so I could drive in the mean time, haven't been bothered to change it and it's held up beautifully to a couple of wheelin' trips now, probably won't change it and just keep using lock wire. I do recommend the thicker stuff and the correct "twisting pliers" for install, and of course don't over spin it.

Don't have a good pic though dang it.

Did you replace your calipers too? Sounds almost like you have a stuck piston.

Maybe I missed the actual driving issue, but as a Norcal native I can say that the roads are rough and going from Klamath to Modoc you'll definitely get some odd pavement. If you have the same issue on smooth parts of i5 there may be a problem, but otherwise it's probably just bumpy asphalt while braking downhill.
