My thought and most recent personal experience.
Bought my 2015 Tacoma OR brand new for 35k in 2015. Drove it until 2 and a half months ago and had almost 90k miles on it. I put down 10k cash when I bought it and paid it off as quick as I could. When I traded it in the dealer gave me just under 24k for the truck. Don’t think I did to bad purchasing brand new. I think the moral of the story is buy the right vehicle at the right price at the right financing term. There’s a tipping point where you can trade in and get good money back out of the vehicle. Once you pass that point then I agree with the keep it and fix it plan. Where the dealer makes their money is people buying stupid vehicles that they can’t afford and then they trade in too frequently. Do your research and know what your plan is going into the purchase and new is not always a bad option. IMHO

 

Biggest repair was the exhaust manifold, it cracked. Changed it my self for ~150 or so. It was a good, plain Jane truck that served me well. Slow 4 banger, but I charged by the hour so...

 

Yeah, knowing the tipping point is the challenge lol. Thanks for sharing your experience... this all helps for sure. As much as I wanna get a brand new rig I'll probably just go get my oil changed and drool on the new ones while I wait, then talk myself out of it, then drive mine home saying, maybe next time.

 

Sounds like you knew what you were doing.

 

I think the tipping point is all about how you plan to drive and how long you keep. 2 years and trade you’re going to lose money. Keeping 4-5+ years with it being a taco you aren’t going to lose money when you trade it again if you take care of it.

I’ve taken a ride in a Kenworth K100E and a Peterbilt 362. Haven’t had the chance to drive a cabover yet. Late 70’s-early 80’s KW’s came with Detroit Diesel or Caterpillar engines from the factory, so that’s the main reason why I like them the most
