Howdy! Been on/off lurking here for awhile. I picked up a ‘14 DCSB here a couple weeks ago and working on some maintenance before i head cross country.

One thing I’ve noticed is there is this hesitation only when taking off from a stop. Its very quick and seems only with moderate throttle. Easy/hard throttle it doesnt do it.

I changed spark plugs, cleaned MAF/TB, changed to a new air filter with no avail. I thought it might just be shifting but its way too quick off the line. I put it in to low gear and it still did it. Im stumped. What should i start checking next?

Have you scanned for codes yet ?
Did you have the battery posts removed when you did the throttle body cleaning ?
Have you measured fuel pressure yet ?
    Whats the mileage ?
There are some issues with cam timing chains stretching

forgive me but i didnt think these newer-ish tacomas had a distributor

-I have not scanned for codes yet. I think the ultra gauge that came with the truck can do that so i will check that off today
-i did not remove the battery posts. Should i have?
-Im not too sure how to measure fuel pressure either.
    -~154k miles on the odo
if the timing chains were stretched, would that not cause symptoms like this through the entire rpm range? genuinely asking.

Haha no worries! I was second guessing myself when you asked. I would have kicked myself for not thinking of it.

If you have a scan guage , checking for codes is a fantastic first step in diagnostics for stumbles ,missfires and hesitations .
When you clean the throttle body without removing the battery posts , it takes a little longer for the computer in your truck to re-set the idle . Sometimes the truck will run very rough or possibly not start on the first few attempts . If you have been driving it for a while now , all should be good .
Timing chain stretch is one possibility but it should be diagnosed after the truck is scanned for codes
Take the truck for a good run and then scan for codes . This is what I would do with my own truck

My truck is nearly 12 years old with 209k miles. It's always been this way for me. Lag in engaging transmission from a stop to first gear. Even from first to second gear seems to long. Shift already damn it. Just learned to live with it. Even had the ECU re-flashed in the first year which helped initially but it came back within a few weeks. Always thought it was just drive by wire BS coupled with Toyota programming.

Here's to hoping that this doesn't devolve into another pedal commander thread...

part of me was thinking maybe this is just the way this thing acts since there is zero other issues that i can tell with the motor/trans.

I think this is the most likely scenario. There's a LOT of computational power going on with drive-by-wire, including how quickly you're pressing the pedal, how far you're pressing the pedal, etc., THEN it has to actuate the throttle accordingly.
