How was the dealer even legally able to put the OP’s truck on the lot without being in possession of the title?

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
Seriously & sincerely I'm sorry to hear that. I hope it all works out for you.

I see and hear too much about folks who get carried away by the allure of a new vehicle and get sold on the 'low monthly payments' without understanding the ramifications of being on the hook with a loan that's going to take 72-84 months to pay off, never mind driving off the lot and instantly being upside-down on the loan.

I would agree...create that paper trail; there should not be any "he said...he said"

Fortunately, I was 7k in the positive, but when I am making my normal salary, it wasn't a problem.

They said its normal for it to be for sale while waiting on the title.

It is such a shit show. The finance manager can't even tell me how much they wrote the payoff for. He said "we got a 30 day payoff." I told him the Credit Union only did 10 day payoffs. <- Their words, not mine.

The same way they sell you a brand new vehicle without having a title. The title is issued by the state, not the manufacturer. The owner signed the transfer paperwork.

Or looking at it another way...how did you trade it in without having a title?

It's done hundreds or thousands of times a day, it only becomes a problem if someone was stupid enough to take in a trade tha the "owner" didn't really own. It's a mature financial process with plenty of checks in place.

When my dad traded his 1996 Pathfinder for my current truck, he didn’t have the title with him because he wasn’t expecting to make a deal that night; He brought the title to the dealer a day or two later...

About 35 years ago I bought a T100. Part of the deal was a shop manual. The dealer gave me something else and refused to do anything else. I sent a letter to the Toyota corporation and the dealer immediately came up with the shop manual. Never went back.

My last one was from the IRS.
Needless to say, it wasn't to inform me they'd found a mistake in my favor..

Mine was from the state version of the IRS telling me that my paid tax preparer had screwed up and I owed them money. The one I sent to him came back "refused." I was going to sue him in small claims court, but a friend of mine who had a lot of experience with that told me that even if he defaulted and the judge ruled against him, the judge wouldn't be likely to issue a any sort of order for him to appear and the collection costs would be on me. Since it was only about $300.00 total, I just ate it and found a new guy.

Sorry OP sounds shady, hopefully Toyota lights a fire under the dealers ass and you get some movement on this. Let me get this straight though, you took a pay cut so you traded in an F250 that you owe $42K on for a Tacoma that costs $42K?

Negative. With trade in, there was almost a 10k difference.

I've always heard they have 10 days to pay it off/buy it out. O.P. you better make sure your not going to owe another monthly payment on your trade and then get dinged because you didnt make the payment in time etc

I'm not paying anything. I went with this dealer because they beat the price of the same truck by $1400 from the local guy. I wish I had just paid the $1400.

As long as the payments are made, it’s still building your credit. Unless you need to take another loan, then it’s very important to get that off your debt to income ratio.

You should make sure they have the right address to send the monthly payment.

My friend bought a new truck and financed it when he bought it at the dealership . He decided to refinance it at his bank and he couldn't get the dealership or the other bank to release the title . It was a real mess for awhile .
