I always recommend folks carry this gear, it's the gear you are required to carry for PMBAR. You'll never regret having any of it.

@whitedlite I should add that during PMBAR '19 I used every bit of that gear (except the lighter). The Pisgah can be a cruel mistress.

honestly a 5 hour drive one way isnt crazy to ride bikes. but 5 there and 5 back in 1 day is a bit much. day trip distance for skiing to me is 2 hours, 3 tops with traffic. 4-6 total hours of driving for a 5-6 hours of intense exercise adds up. but thats also why i wanted to get a truck with that adaptive cruise control, make those long days easier

Haha I know what you mean! Most of my trails are 30 minutes to 1 hour in northern Virginia but way better trails about 2 +/-hours away. Im actually from El Paso and my parents currently live in MA. Maybe it’s a Texas thing but when people ask I just say I’m visiting Boston even though they live in Walpole.

I figured the Austin trails included the surrounding area. I also want to check out the gravel riding down there. I follow Colin Strickland on Strava and Instagram and he’s always posting some pretty sick rides around Austin. I’d definitely have to rent a car and or bike though haha

I need a good waterproof rain jacket.
I’ll be doing some winter gear shopping.

Agreed, but the cruise control in these trucks shifts so abruptly hahah I can’t stand it (but I can drive hours to go bike no problem)

Northern VT northeast kingdom is about 4 hours each way, good weather/no traffic (northern NH and VT in the summer on weekends can be gridlocked....)

I would definitely make it at least an overnight trip if not Friday to Sunday. Highland is about 2.5 hours each way (also North). Fun place. But, I am working on setting up the truck for camping and making it annoying for anything but camping and biking

Oh yeah, I just meant actual borders too. Boston has a border, locals know Walpole. That's fine. That's "Boston", where as the same thing "walpole" in Austin is still just Austin. Austin is massive. It's 20% of Rhode Island....And DFW is 7 times the size of RI. A little bit more, but still.

those definitely work. my old columbia rain jacket made me feel like a kangaroo while riding though, giant extra fabric pocket around my gut while riding and would sometimes get caught on my legs. got a performance hi-vis yellow rain jacket when they still had brick and mortar stores and it is more enjoyable to ride in, mainly on roads. i just wanna look like a cool kid with one of those mtb specific jackets

gotcha, I still may buy those end of season close outs from one of the online stores. Hard to deny some of those +50% off deals.

Great gear. Ridiculous pricing. No shortage of quality stuff at blue collar prices.

Socks? I think they make water proof socks nowadays. I don’t like wet or cold feet.

@whitedlite snacks. Something for cramps. If you go do black mountain, as you should, the climb is nothing like you’ve seen in Alabama.

On longer trips I always have a cliff bar, and some mustard packets in my pack. Both have helped me tremendously

Are you looking to buy a rain jacket? Or something for mountaineering? I'd probably forgo the ArcTeryx, not on quality just on price. The Outdoor Research Apollo rain jackets are pretty sweet and light enough to take on every ride plus they are stretchy.

what @Bannerman said. There are some more items I might add. I apologize if this was already covered. Zip ties, patch/plug kit, tubes, multi-tool w/chain breaker, extra link, extra derailleur hanger.
