Pretty difficult for the heater to get hot enough to cook off a round. Needs about 275 degrees. The coolant that provides the heat source only gets to about 200 degrees, then air is passed through the heater core. I doubt if the air out of the heater core will approach 100 degrees.

Wouldn't worry about heat, but it's a rimfire cartridge, any sharp impact on the edge of the firing end might, might set it off. Try shooting at it with live rounds. Then report back..... report.

Thanks for all the replies. I got busy with the holidays but wanted to report back some handy info for anyone else who drops live rounds of ammunition, or...whatever down in the windshield heater vent --- If you keep driving for a bit, whatever you drop will fall on the floor at your feet. I found the stray .22LR round one day beneath the pedals. I am positive that it was the missing round.

Also glad to hear that the vent wouldn't get hot enough to cook a round off. I wasn't too concerned about it rattling around and setting off the primer since primers dont explode when you drop a round on concrete, and its only plastic in those vents.

TLDR; It's safe to store all your ammo in the vents of your truck.
