The big problem now that I've replaced the door speakers is it's just those songs with high pitch frequencies that sound horrible, and I feel they're coming from the tweeters. Are those tweeters good or producing good high pitch sounds?

To be fair. I did this 10,years ago. Crutchfield is your friend for finding a nice head unit.

I replaced all speakers with kicker (if I’m not mistaken, the suburb tweeters are also kicker...don’t really remember and didn’t pay attention when installing them). I also did a kicker key amp and a kicker hideaway sub under the drivers seat. It’s night and day. Absolutely no comparing the two. I’m contemplating trading in my truck for a 2021 with all the bells and whistles (minus JBL) and will more than likely install all of it again in the new one.

Does anyone have any experience with a custom audio system retaining the stock head unit in comparison to the "OEM Audio Plus" setup for the 3rd gen Tacoma?

Check out my previous post. It’s exactly what you’re referring to. And there’s a lot of people on here who have done it as well.

Ok, so in your experience between the Kicker setup or any other custom setup you've experienced in a Tacoma you'd prefer that and this it's better over the "OEM Audio Plus" setup?

I’ve only ever experienced the Kicker setup I mentioned and briefly experienced the stock JBL setup. I don’t have any experience with the OEM plus. But, I would say that the Licker is probably just as good, if not better. I’ve heard that the OEM Plus is “tuned to our trucks” but don’t really know what that means. Lol. You can tune any radio, so the same results could be accomplished by any setup.

Hey guys just read through all of this. Previous car was a 17 Jetta with the fender premium audio and I just want to get close to how that sounded. What I've gathered is the easy install and cheap way to go is kickers(or other plug n play) speakers in the door and Subi tweeters? If anyone's got experience with kickers and some others they think are better please chime in. Of course price determines quality alot of the time so looking for around the same price range as those kickers.

Also of those two kicker door speakers linked in the start of this page, which was put in front vs rear? Site shows both fit front door.

I can’t answer on other speakers you asked for reference to, but the 6x9 goes up front and the 6.5 goes in rear (I actually used 6.75 in rear).

Any modification to the speaker itself to make it mount up right in rear? and do you have oem headunit and no added amp? That's the route I want to go 1 because I'm pretty weak as far as wiring goes and 2 budget.

I used speaker brackets/adapters. Crutchfield should be able to tell you which ones. If not, shoot me a message tomorrow and I’ll try to look up with ones I used.

I have the OEM headunit and added the kicker key 200.4 amp.

With how small that amp is were you able to hide it behind the dash or maybe even passenger footwell somewhere?
from my experience with my dad wiring our old xj the closer to the headunit the amp is, the less headaches that follow. We played around with 3 or 4 locations with it and removed every piece of trim probably 3 times. I really wanna keep it calm with the truck.

I put it under the passenger seat. It would easily fit behind the radio, and I’ve seen some people put it behind the dash near the glovebox, and even in the glove box. I live in Texas and wanted to allow it to get good air circulation in the summer. Figured the seat was good enough.

Has anyone measured the impedance curve from the stock tweeter and redesigned the crossover to deal with the impedance peak? I bet fixing that would make the stock tweeters sound much better. But paying $30 for a capacitor is not as satisfying as have a new tweeter in your hand. Parts express or Madisound have many drivers available. But many of those are for home audio.

Are you running the door speakers without an amp? Stock head unit?
