Need Help with Rock light wiring...

I am working on trying to wire up some Rock Lights and I need to make my own harness since I cant find an 8 lead harness anywhere on the market. I want to be able to turn the lights on with or without the engine/ignition being on. I think I may have it figure out but I want to double check. Here is a diagram of what I think needs to be done...



I am running the lights off of a fusebox.

Then I have:
Negative from fuse box to Relay pos. 85
Postive to Relay pos. 30
Positive from 30 to Switch for a constant hot
- 86 to switch
- Switch to ground
- Switch to dash light fuse to have bottom switch lights turn on when other lights are on (might leave this out)
- 85 to all the lights for ground
- 87 to all the lights for power/positive

Can someone who knows what they are talking about confirm that this is what needs to be done? Im more concerned about the constant hot wire and whether or not I can leave the switch to dash light fuse unconnected...

Also if anyone has done rock lights in the past and has some pics that would be awesome. Trying to see where is best to run wires underneath the cab/where is best to mount the lights.

 

Your switch doesn't need 12V off the relay. Get 12V from a fuse inside the truck like you're doing with the illumination. Illumination is not required, it's just to light up the switch.

Your light grounds do not need to go to the relay. They may ground anywhere. The chassis, the battery, another nearby ground, etc.

The ground at the relay is only to complete the circuit on the coil in the solenoid when you flip your switch. From there the 12V high side just comes from your source, switched by the relay, and then to your load (lights). The lights, again, ground anywhere.

Synopsis, you don't need all those connections at the relay. And get your 12V source for the switch from an in-cab fused location.

 

Ah okay! I thought that if I used a fuse I wouldn't be able to use the lights with the truck off. Do you know which fuses I can tap into for a constant hot on the switch off the top of your head?

 

No, I probe around with a multimeter until I find what I want.

I am confused on what this is/ how to apply it... Sorry Im a total noob...

 

No worries. What I did for mine was run a power and ground down each side of the truck from front to back. With those Ts you can make a cut in the wire run and place the junctions in. If you'd ever have to replace a light or whatever all you'd have to do is undo the wiring at the T and rewire the new one back in. If I also wanted to add any more lights, I'd just put another cut in the wire run and place another T in. It's just easier than having to solder/butt splice stuff in every time. Mine have been through mud and submersion many times and they're fine. I destroyed two of my lights on one trip and just pulled them out and I still have the rest of the lights until I get replacements.

That does make sense If I were to do it this way would I run the ground off the relay like above or from somewhere else?

 

Either way. I like to have ground in one place. But that's me.
