Easy way. GO in to your apple menu, system preferences, and turn on screen sharing and allow incoming and outgoing connections. You will need to do this on both computers. It will give you an address that you will need to make note of. Next go to the finder or click on your desktop. Then push command (also apple key on older macs) K or go to finder, go , connect to server. This is where you enter the address. Once located you can select to share screen from the finder under network. It should show your moms computer name or ip address. Then from there your gold.

No but you need to make sure that you back up properly. On a typical back up it will not do music, movies, and documents, it will just do system back ups. You need to set it up so you backup your (home) folder. Also called user folder as well as a normal back up. When it does this it just makes an exact copy on the other drive, it DOES NOT erase anything. I would suggest you guy from newegg as they have some of the best prices on a hard drive. Also make sure you get high speed cable capability if you have music or movies!

Well a couple of things... FIrst are you using the aux cable to push sound or are you using an ipod cable that plugs in to the bottom, meant for charging and sound? The reason I ask that part is that on the 5th gen ipod nano they changed the pin count and set up in the cables so it will not work with the same accessories as the older ipods. However a few people have been able to do a work around by using an aux cable from headphone jack in to car. Your stereo should have one. If not I heard of a new cable from monster and some others that is kit ready, not sure how your hooked up to your stereo.

"High speed" cables are only for ipod/iphone/ipad to computer. It's just a USB cable with a proprietary end, they just haven't come up with a defining name for it. I just call them ipod cables.

If the person gets an external drive they have the option for firewire (IEEE1394), USB 2.0, or eSATA. Get whatever is compatible with the computer (most likely USB). From there, get the cheapest compatible cable. They are ALL going to work just the same for speed, connectivity, and so on.

How old is your car head unit? It may not be compatible with your newer nano, which is very common. For instance, my Alpine iDA-X100 is not compatible with my iPhone 4.
Additionally, the internal speaker on the nano 5 is notorious for being a problem maker. Best advice is if you know the unit is compatible, then you may need to try variations for resetting the nano and the headunit.

Well I think you mis understood. I am not talking about iPod cables. And for you to make a statement like that about cables is kinda funny. Each kind have different transfer rates and as long as the bus rate is as capable it makes a massive difference. USB 2.0 is the most common and versatile. Fire wire is the fastest. And I was simply saying go with the fastest cable that the computer can handle. I see backups for a living and when you compare an 8 hour back up to a 2 hour back up thy extra 1.75 you save is not worth it. Unless your poor as hell and your time is not worth that much.

It's not. A $6 generic USB cable is going to perform the same as a $100 Cryoparts USB cable.

I left the interface decision to the user. Time capsule/machine/whatever runs as a background process so the user isn't going to notice speed. For a restore, most people assume it's going to take a chunk of time, but they aren't doing it every day so it's an accepted thing. They let it start and walk away.

More important to the home user is compatibility. Firewire is great and all, but it's not very common. The macbook and macbook air don't have firewire. Many PC laptops and desktops don't have it either. If you bought the drive to be multipurpose, or later decided to do other things with it than your original intent, you just tossed up a lot of barriers with firewire.

I have an amp in my car capable of doing 1100W RMS. When you compare it to a premium car amp from the dealer at 35W RMS, the money you save is not worth it. Unless you are poor as hell and your music is not worth it. :D

I think something is being left out. Try running it again. When it errors out, open your console and copy/paste the logs here.

That's strange. I've never really used Time Machine. Maybe one of the other guys will know something.

I have a question. I just switched from a PC to a Mac. I saved my old Itunes Library on an external hard drive. I took the music from the external hard drive and moved the to the Itunes library. When I start Itunes I do not see the music I transferred. If I go into the Itunes library folder and play the song it then shows up on Itunes. What am I doing wrong? Please help this is frustrating.

The easiest way is in iTunes go to "File"-->"Add to Library..." and when the window opens browse to the directory where your library is stored, (iTunes Music if I read your post right) and then without going any deeper into other folders hit the Choose button. This will add everything in that directory including subdirectories.

I have a feeling your old drive has some bad sectors (bad parts of the drive that can be read or written to). If you have a program that can check the health of your hard drive, I'd give that a shot.

Back in my day there was no command key. You had the open apple and the closed apple, and you liked them!
