An solid air compressor is one of best investments for off roading. Took me years to really figure that out.

I recently went through this question myself. Asked around a bit and found that GMRS is the primary form of communication with HAM and CB a close second each for different reasons.

With that, I decided on the Midland MXT275 for my truck, and for smaller FRS/GMRS handheld units for when out of the truck.

I want to completely hide the head unit remotely inside the innards of my center console, or under the rear seats somewhere. Then have a flush mount plug in jack for the Mic somewhere upfront.

    Should be fun.

Quite a few things at this point..
Only reason I didn't go this route was the extra cost over handhelds and extra work to install. And don't you have to purchase an antenna? With my handhelds, I put a metal piece on the back so it can go on my magnetic mount when out adventuring with others.

@Superhulk LB do you have an antenna for your radio? If so where is it mounted... if not that radio check that we did in Portland seems even better

It came with a tiny antenna, I have it on the roof. It’s magnetic. Probably figure a better option at some point and maybe a larger antenna, but it works for now.
One thing to keep in mind is, I still needed a handheld when I jumped out to help spot the few times.

That right there is another reason I chose handheld, I use my radios outside of my vehicle often too, spotting, hiking, camping, etc.

Had to sell my 17 Tacoma for a tow rig in order to pull my new home. Still here for a bit to keep in touch.
Im just a gadget geek that likes to tinker. So I'm going with the midland micro-mobile and the larger "32 inch" 6dB midland antenna. Tucking the head unit away, and mounting the antenna at the rear of the bed. Cause you know, chicks dig a guy with a big antenna. And since learning my talkabout died, Im going to grab the 50 channel midland handhelds for spotting and spares.

The Midland did come with a small antenna (I think magnetic). However, I did go ahead and purchase the 6dB gain whip and the lip mount. I was also going to grab the tiny 3dB dong as well, but they were out of stock at the time.

I'm probably going to weld a corner gusset somewhere in the front area of my aluminum bed rack to attach the lip mount to. It's designed to clamp on to the hood up below the front windshield, but it will be easy peasy to just run the antenna cable from either the center console, or from under the rear seats, out a body grommet under the cab, and up between the cab and bed to the rack. I already have fused (red and black 10awg wire) 12v power routed from the battery to under the rear passenger seat to an ARB fridge plug. I put a junction terminal there so I can easily add additional low power items. Just need to get a Mic remote mount cable.

So I tried to look over the site to determine where I should drop my first post...

A pack of nerds with tacos that advertise as noob friendly - sounds like my kinda group :D

So hello, I am brand new to TacomaWorld (minus some lurking for a while) and I bought my Tacoma about 3 months ago; it's a lovely red 2nd gen TRD sport with a lift that came with the truck from the dealer; she's Canadian; but not a spot of rust on her belly, so I'm happy!

I live and work in Vancouver, WA and I'm really hoping to get some mods going, and some overlanding trips.

I read this blog recently: https://www.trailsoffroad.com/blog/overlanding-across-washington and it has got me REALLY itching for some adventure... COVID hasn't helped with this itch at all either hahaha

Anyways, I work at a bank, so typical banker hours 9-5 m-f with the semi-frequent saturday rotation.

I'm an extrovert at the core and love to hang out, whether its for games, food or adventures!

I would enjoy nothing less than to make some new friends and some new experiences :)

EDIT: I've attached an image of my taco

Hey I’m Mike. Born and raised in Portland, moved down to Salem a few years ago but I’ll definitely try and make it to a PDX meet. Sold my 09 a few years ago and just picked this beauty up last Friday. 79C0133F-59E2-4676-A130-F9A3479E400A.jpg

    Hey welcome guys! Nice trucks!
Hang here enough and you will find some play days. Lots to explore in the PNW and these trucks are awesome!

Thanks guys! I have a small handful of mod ideas in mind, but wife keeps me grounded and asks that I don't sell the house to trick out the truck :D

That said, I've got some rock sliders/steps arriving Dec 24th, cannot wait to get them put on, gonna look slick imo
