After I finish the insulation I was planning on adding a forced air heater. Likely 220v for now. Run it off a smart thermostat so I can warm it up without going out there. Keep it steady at 40-45° the rest of the time.

 

My dad used to run one for about thirty minutes and it would heat the garage for hours with the doors closed. It had a safety switch that cut it off it the air quality was too low....

 

If burning properly, they release water vapor and carbon dioxide which is less dangerous than carbon monoxide. The sensor is most likely an oxygen sensor, not a carbon monoxide detector. Thats why it's a good idea to have a separate carbon monoxide detector in case the burn malfunctions and in closed spaces to have some ventilation.

 

I put this little guy in my 3 car, works well and has a built in thermostat that I set to lowish if I'm going to be in the garage working for a few days in a row.

The price jumped a bunch from when I bought it 2 years ago.

That is exactly what I was looking at. I figured the 5kwatt is undersized but I don't want to kill all my service to the garage to run the demand of a 10k even the 7k leaves little room for a compressor to run. I'll supplement with my Kerosene heater to bump the temp up and run the electric to hold it stable once at 65ish.

 

He mainly ran it so the rest of the house didn't require anything additional on cold days. A garage can let out a lot of heat and let in a lot of cold. If detached a bit of a different story

 

Yup and I put mine on the ceiling blowing towards the work bench and me. It also happens to be blowing down a wall so if running over night circulates air and warms the entire space.

 

Tim’s garage gets so warm he does most of his shock rebuilds in the nude...

I guess I've been lucky dropping off and picking up.... He did offer me a beer once, now that seems super suspicious

The heater I bought says you only need 1.5 sq ft of ventilation when using the heater and my garage is not sealed so I haven't been too worried about CO with a side door just cracked open

Insulating will make a HUGE difference. Even without a heater. But unless you have a plan for cooling, it also tends to hold heat in the Summer as well. I use a medium? size Heater Buddy and it will heat the area I need very well pretty quickly. It seems to heat the entire garage somewhat as well. I have a three car garage, so it's not small. I bought the best insulation I could for BAT and the fiberboard for the doors.

I'd stay away from electric heat if possible. Electric heat is literally a controlled short and a fan thrown in if you're lucky. Costs a lot to run electric heaters. Fine for small spaces but not a garage really. I've used them for spot heating in the garage on really cold days back in the day. I like the ceramic disc heaters for electric. The Heater Buddy's use a ceramic disc as well but use gas for the heat source. They are really cool and safe. Used one in my truck bed and Softtopper. No venting except the small gaps in the Softtopper. You can get a connector to connect to a 20# propane tank as well.

 

I use a 220V oil filled heater in my un-insulated garage and it heats the shit out of it. Costs less to run than the space heater I use for a few minutes a day in the bathroom.

 

Have this one in the garage. Has the heat sensor and cuts off when its moved or falls over. Works well.

I have a two car insulated detached garage that I heat with two dinky ass electric desk heaters. They were super cheap, have thermostats, and mercury switches that shut them off if they get knocked over. They’re an interim solution until I plumb in propane for a proper forced-air

unit heater, but for my purposes, they kick ass. No problems whatsoever getting things toasty with the garage door closed, to the point that I can work at my bench in jeans and a t-shirt while it’s freezing outside and be perfectly comfortable.

 

I would like to do this but I think my natural gas is run into the basement on the opposite corner of the house so it would be a pretty big PITA

maybe I'll skip the electric 220 heater and just run the propane intermittently to keep things warm as needed once I get some more insulation in
