Do you have a spare on your rig? I've been going out more and always had a concern that I still have my stock (~31") spare if something was to happen. Do you know if a 33" (close to it) would fit under there and would the exhaust cause issues with the tire? I know there is a heat shield but want to know if anyone has experience with such. My fitment is 285/70/17, same as yours.

 

I'm looking at the same thing right now. I think the 285/70/17 spare will fit with relocating the pully back and bending the side brackets. Still running the stock for now.

 

285/75/16
On stock TRD Pro wheels and suspension.
Only rubbed at heavy compression while locked. Two seconds with a heat gun sorted that out.

 

I don’t mind doing a little work but don’t want to relocate/adjust the exhaust location. My concern is the exhaust heats up and melts the rubber. I can’t really run the spare if I have a flat. You can’t run the spare on the back if the wheels are uneven.

 

What offset are your wheels? These Tacoma's amaze me in terms of inconsistency when it comes to rubbing. You rub on your setup and another guy runs 285/75/16's on a bone stock Pro with no rubbing. I am still on the fence which direction I want to take. I don't mind modding and making things would but would like to avoid a CMC if at all possible. I guess only one way to fine out lol.

 

@runnin4tacos confirmed a 285/70/17 would fit in the spare tire location in one of their videos.

I would imagine a 285/70/17 tire would be the largest that would fit down there

 

What are the specs on the wheels, what’s the offset on those bad boys??

Slightly off topic but for those of you installing these bigger sizes, I’d highly recommend the Rough Country speedometer calibrator. Easy to program, easy to install. 100% reversible. Fixed my speedometer after installing 285/75r16.

Yeah seriously, I feel like I always land on the abnormal side of that coin lol.

Wheels are 0 offset 16x8, so 4.5 bs. I got a CMC but was still rubbing on plastic bad - trimmed/molded plastic and got another alignment to max out caster to 3.8 (via adjusting the LCA bolts first) and it helped a ton. It all felt like a hassle at the time, including fitting the spare, but now that it’s done I have zero regrets.

No more rub, even on trails!

 

Are you getting any rubbing on the UCA's at full lock? I have a little on my passenger side. Same setup as you... TRD Pro stock and same tires. I'm assuming it might just be an alignment thing as it's barley touching at full lock only on the passenger side (when I turn hard left).

 

I put my 285/75R16 on the stock spare steelie and cranked it into the spare location. Didn't relocate or modify anything. Its tight but it fits. Nitto Ridge Grapplers btw.

 

I’m always staring at my 285’s... probably because they caused me to do this quite a bit.

 

haha me too! Surprisingly though I haven't seen too big of a hit. My current wheels only weigh 22lbs and a stocker is supposed to be around 27 so I'm guessing with rubber it may have evened out. With tires, a lift and city driving I'm getting 16-17 mpg. That's not great but my previous rig was right around 12-13 mpg doing the same thing

Before I get yelled at, I have search function'd my ass off. Got my spacers on today to go with the Nitto Grapplers 285/75/16 and am super clear of any rubbing on the inside of the tire but I'm catching the back of the well basically every time I back up and turn. Both sides but seems like driver side is worse. I've found some info on the heat gun / blow dryer method with a mallet but this feels like some pretty hard plastic or even metal. Anyone trimmed this spot before? Very bottom section of the well. Much appreciated and Merry Xmas to my TW fam!!!
