Heading in for my 30K oil change in a few weeks. My VIN# is on the list and it sounds like a no-brainer to get the TSB. My only hesitation is the MPG hit that several have reported.

I think the mileage hit is based on early reports, pre-full learning the tune, and people trying to make it shift, or enjoying the bit of extra power that is felt. plus... we have winter blend fuel, effecting the fuel economy right now. i would bet after April 1st, you might see an increase in fuel mileage reports, with summer blend fuels showing up.

i run non ethanol rec fuel so, i dont really see a mileage change, unless i cant keep my foot out of the happy pedal. your results may vary. Ski

I am new to reviewing TSBs, where is the VIN range listed? I am not seeing it or I am looking for the wrong title?

TSB-0092-20 is not VIN based, it's ECU calibration based. If you have a V6 and either a 2019 or 2020 with the following ECU codes, it applies:
    • 8966304B3000 - Engine
    • 8966304B3100 - Engine
    • 8966304B3200 - Engine
    • 896650407000 - Trans
    • 896650407100 - Trans
    • 8966304B8000 - Engine
    • 896650410000 - Trans

Gotcha, thank you. Another noob question about Tacomas, where do I find my code? I googled but didn’t come up with anything.

If you have an OBD code reader, either wired or wireless to an APP, most will provide that calibration code. Otherwise, auto part stores have readers you can borrow in the parking lot to check.

is this tool able to modify settings or just scan codes? Really want to change the number of blinks on the auto blinker. 3 is to few. 5 would be great!!! However, just trying to justify the cost just for that preference.

No, that is going to be the SAE standard powertrain only. To change the customization settings, you need something that can access Toyota specific stuff, Techstream (dealer software, but available to consumers), or something like Carista. For a new purchase, dealers are supposed to offer one free customization as well. Or if they are nice they will do it during a major service that has Techstream connected anyway, fuel pump recall for example.

If you're so inclined, you can spend $15 for a clone VIM cable, then setup Techstream via instructions here - https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/ecu-tsb-update.562550/#post-18431380 Then you can customize all you like, add keys, and run diagnostic tests.

Dealer has the truck now for Fuel Pump, Radar and I printed and told them I have the "insert symptoms here" and wanted the TSB. Looked like first time he saw the TSB. Ill let you know what happens, wish me luck.

If not there's always the opportunity to drive to Lynnwood with a case of beer for one of our fellow TW members.

yes, some of our guys really deserve that beer, but its a long ways for me. If I'm ever up there, I would consider the beer to Lynwood and also Kirkland.

Is the performance from this update similar or better to using the ECT?

Not quite as dramatic as ECT, but close. To me it feels like ECT was improved from the original a little bit too, with even more throttle response. It's never going to be a hot rod, but with the new flash and ECT on it feels pretty sporty. Even w/out ECT on, it feels dramatically sportier than the original factory tune when getting on the gas.

Got the truck back, they did both recalls and the TSB no problems, phew! I didnt drive it enough home to comment on the TSB's impact but I will after some experience with it.

This was Middletown Toyota in CT.

Not exactly true. There's 04A61 and 04A71 depending on transmission and if the earlier TSB was done or not.

As always, see the TSB Update thread.

No, it's just a Scanner/Reader; but still a very handy tool to have.

The official Toyota Techstream Software (which you can get free in this thread: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/ecu-tsb-update.562550/ ) will allow you to make this and many other changes.
You will also need the Tactrix Cable to connect your computer to your truck (not free :().

Or, you might be able to do that with the Carista App and the Carista Adapter (free service for the first 30 days, and then via a paid subscription after that). If you want to go the Carista route, then ask around here first, to be certain that it will do what you want (I don't have Carista, so I'm not certain).
