Newbie here! I recently bought a 96 tacoma 2.4 4x4 with lockers added. I tried 4wl initially when I bought it but that was it. We had some bad weather today so I decided to put it in 4wh... Everything was going well until I tried to turn. The truck pretty much stopped rolling and acted like it was in a bind.... I'm talking wheels at 45 degrees.....I had to stop in the road and put it down in 2wh. What could the problem be?

Not supposed to use 4wd on dry hard surfaces otherwise you will bind up or worse brake something

It’s how 4WD works. It’s not AWD. So normal.

Same thing happened to me when I bought the truck and tried to show off without having a clue. Just don't run it on dry pavement in 4lo and you'll be fine. There is a thread somewhere explaining how much stress you put on a locked system when turning.

Yeah don't do that. Tight turns like in a parking lot. Not good. Welcome to TW

asphalt has a lot of traction for 4wd even when wet. Making slow tight turns in 4wd on asphalt is going to bind it up. Find a dirt road to put her in 4wd on and you'll be fine

    That’s Normal.

You really don’t what to run 4WD on high traction surfaces. The situation is worse if turning.
Locked and turning on a dry nonslip surface can be bad. Real bad.

And before some one says you CAN use 4WD on pavement, YES you can.
But the circumstances are NOT NORMAL under which you do this.

Manual locking hubs are not the same thing as differential lockers

Your tacoma has open diffs too. It operates functionally the same as your jeep in 2wd and 4wd.

Are you confusing hubs with lockers?

Your Jeep has a solid front axle, Tacoma is independent front suspension (IFS) which uses CV axles to turn the front wheels when the hubs are locked and 4wd is engaged. CV axles do not like to bind up, they tend to go snap if it's too severe

It's a common misunderstanding, no worries. Differential lockers are a whole other topic on their own lol
