Good morning fellow tacoma enthusiasts. New to the forum. I have a 2017 2WD tacoma off road automatic with 23,000 miles. Everything stock. I'm not happy with the power, searching for gears in my truck. What is the best solution? regear, OV tune, or supercharger?? Thank you.

By once, cry once! Supercharge it!!!

Or start with some cheaper options like pedal commander and verify TSB for ECU update.

Best is dependent on other variables like what you're willing to spend. The items you mentioned vary wildly in typical install prices somewhere around $2200, $200 and $6500 (respectively.)

If the power bothered me enough to spend thousands? I'd use it on the trade in for a bigger, more powerful truck.

It sounds like a good argument. I had the same feeling for a while and was considering moving up to a Tundra.

But, A Tundra of equal year or newer (and low mileage) was going to be somewhere between 8k to 20k to upgrade to what I wanted (admittedly, that was a 2020 pro). Add in only getting 12-14 mpg stock, and it's a pretty significant cost to get a bigger rig. New gears and OVT is only about $3500 combined and it totally changes the way the taco drives.

OP, my recommendation is gears + OVT. If you get those your truck will drive like a dream and you don't need to upgrade anything else. If you get one or the other, it'll feel great, but it won't be juuuuust right. I did gears first and had them with the stock ecu for about 9 months. It was pretty nice, but still had some gear hunting. OVT was the icing on the cake. Superchargers are a whole other ball of wax.

it is a V6, you get what you get. gears will make it "feel" like it has more hp but, in reality, it is just moving the torque curve lower. unfortunately, this motor platforms power is above 3500 rpms, and needs to be "beaten on" upstairs in the rpm range, to make it feel like it has power. again... it is a v6, it isnt going to act like a v8, unless you add an SC, or turbo. then you sacrifice reliability, and you better know how to tune, fix stuff because, it will be temperamental.

suck it up, and deal with it, or buy a v8, a diesel, or a second "toy auto" with big hp, that makes you grin. Ski

2017? Start with the TSB. It's free and fixed the issue for many of us.

Yeah, I'd definitely start with the cheaper route and work your way towards the expensive route. I know that some people are going to rag on you and tell you, "iT's nOT a V8! DoN'T exPEcT It To dRiVE LIke OnE!", but this truck does an awful job of selecting gears and managing power on the stock tunes. It's not a V8 vs V6 issue. There are tons of V6s that drive so much better than the Tacoma. That being said, I love my Tacoma. I can go anywhere and do just about anything in it. Other than the terrible gear selection/drive train, this truck is amazing.

OVTune (VF Tuner) fixed a lot of the drivability issues for me, but I would also love to regear it. I just don't have the $3,000 - 4,000 to do that right now. The cost of VF Tuner was definitely worth it to me. If you don't like it and decided to regear, then VF Tuner will still be super helpful after the regear. It will not be money wasted.

I would say start with ovtune its the cheapest and won't be a waste even if you change gears or supercharge later

From my reading, the regear is going to be the most effective option.

Supercharger would be fun, but you'll still be searching for gears. I don't know enough about the OVTune to have an opinion there.

Best bet is to keep reading on people's experiences. I would suggest you focus your reading on gears to know if that is the direction you want to go.

OVtune with the "Mild to Wild" tune from Mooseditty (forum member, search his name) will completely transform the truck. I'd start there.

It's worth mentioning that OP has a 2WD. Gears on my 4x4 were about 2800 installed. He'd be spending far less money if only having to pay for labor and gears on one axle.
