Yeah that’s why I haven’t done anything yet haha. Most of my ideas including making stuff just because I usually enjoy that. I definitely don’t want a side job that I don’t enjoy because I already don’t enjoy my day job 100% haha

although I have considered starting a consulting firm because I could just hate my day job while owning it and getting paid more haha

Yeah I feel like it’s just the DC thing to do. Work as a consultant hate it but like the money so start your own small business, win small contracts and make money until you retire haha

I wouldn’t say I just have a blast doing my side hustles. Metal work and garage doors, but the gratitude people give me makes it worth it.

Metal work is something I wanted to do as a hobby so I started an LLC to take advantage of those business expenses and there’s a lot. Big overhead means less competition.

Also what I love about metal work is I will always have work I can pack up with me no matter where I move without having to completely rebuild customer base.

I wanna work from home full time lol

Yeah I don’t have the capital to start something that extravagant though.

    Hella DC thing.

We had a dude that we paid an EXORBITANT amount of money just for his contact list. If we needed to meet someone, he made a call and got a healthy check.

My neighbor has an excellent side hustle turned primary job.

He just quit his primary job as a mechanic at Mazda after 14 years and he now runs his own espresso machine repair business. Seems pretty happy to me and works out of his garage. Pretty lucrative but you need a large town for a customer base.

Haha I have heard that the shit that happens in movies where people write a number on a piece of paper and slide it over is a common occurrence in DC

it’s usually retired feds that move over to contracting though. Idk if I’m ready to make the jump to the fed side though

I have witnessed this with co-workers retiring from the military. They are really getting paid for their rolodex and ability to navigate the bureaucracy.

Oh he had a baller exchange with us one time after a meeting. Basically he was a friend of the C suite so he was sorta doing us some freelance favors initially and the accounting dept was like "we appreciate your services, but we're kinda unsure what to pay you given the arrangement."

His response was "Figure out what I'm worth to you, divide by 12, I'll expect your check on the 15th of every month" then just walked out of the lobby.

Yes definitely. My dad is actually close to retirement from the army and he made a good point though of how after a couple years his close connections might not even be in the same office anymore due to moving around so much.

Hahaha that’s pretty awesome. That’s not my life goal but I wouldn’t be too upset if I’m ever in his position haha

Hey that's who we use! Yeah, I have an option to invest in a fund that is company stock, 0 ER, in my 401k. That's why I said that, it's most likely (for a company like Boeing) just going to be the same deal.

Now, I will not say anything political and give any opinion about these numbers, however, I will say, under the current administration and tax codes, which may change, here is a decent article that gets into the numbers in taxes for short and long term gains (income brackets included).

    https://www.investopedia.com/articl...gterm-vs-shortterm-capital-gain-tax-rates.asp

(@Gunshot-6A you probably know this, but just generally posting it).

Here's a family tree line to follow: My coworkers friends cousin and him, bought a laser cutter (or water jet cutter, can't remember, either way, some sort of plate metal cutter). He set up an auto feed table, and it's CNC programmed. He bids on jobs and has it set up in his garage or shed or whatever. His current contract is a whole bunch of plates that bolt onto street lights in a city. Either way, he has those and then one-off jobs on the sides, etc. It's not his day to day, typically he spends a few hours a week doing the G code and making sure there's more material in the auto feed every so often.

This is his side hustle, it runs on its own, no supervision. Makes about 100k/year doing it.

I hate white. I have a white truck because somehow white vehicles are the easiest to keep clean, but everything else. NOPE. I wear black or surplus mechanix  still have friends on base

Military retirement is cool. You do 20 years and get the full deal. Then you can go into the civil service (FAA, etc) and your prior years count for that retirement too. A lot of guys will do 20 in the Air Force, then 10 in the FAA. You get your 20 year Air Force retirement, VA healthcare, and then you get your 30 year FAA retirement.

I worked at a start-up long ago where we hired a sales guy whose kid played on a soccer team with kids of a bunch of C level people in Manhattan. Basically he just went to soccer games and talked to whatever other parents showed up. He got us a deal with Merrill Lynch. Although that was right before the mortgage crisis of the late 2000s and Merrill Lynch's resulting problems. We had invested too much toward that deal and it basically ended up killing the start-up.

That's a good breakdown for the average person. Also, I won't speculate as to the financial status of anyone in this thread, but there are some potentially pretty radical changes to come shortly as well in relation to short and long term cap gains for high earners (400K+) depending on if they get approved by Congress.

That water jet idea is awesome. I never even thought of something like that. I’m sure it’s super expensive but in a decent sized county or city it’s a good idea!

FAA is insane when it comes to that. If you are talking Air Force to air traffic controller then that’s an amazing retirement. Getting max $180k before overtime. Plus having to retire at 52 and moving to a desk job or going to a high paying consulting firm. All without requiring a college degree. Air traffic controllers can make it huge. I currently support the FAA so I am constantly told that I should become a controller. I am too old now though haha.
