At the dealer now. In my service reservation request I put in the TSB I was coming in to see and the issues with the truck. The service adviser said not to do that, but rather just put in exactly what's wrong with the truck to match the wording in the TSB and leave out the TSB number. He made the update to my reservation and said they're going to do it. We'll see how it goes, but wanted to give that tip to other people making reservations for the TSB.

Any reason as to why the SA had you do the reservation that way?

Inquired with my dealer yesterday about the TSB update (my VIN is listed). They gave me the run around and told me no warranties or recalls were listed for my VIN. I informed them that it was neither but they kept telling me that "we can't find anything for your vehicle". I asked if they had the capability to look up the TSB by the number I provided (of course they do) but they first told me they could not find it.

After they finally stopped lying and magically found the bulletin, it escalated to the service manager who informed me this was not covered under any warranty (lie - I have a '19 under 80,000 miles) and I would have to pay out of pocket for the update. When I asked how much it would cost he said "there's absolutely no way of knowing".

So I called Toyota Corporate, filed a complaint, and asked them to verify the TSB info I had was correct. They agreed and informed me that in order to receive the update I would have to pay the dealer's "diagnostic fee" BUT if my complaint was related to the TSB and it fixes the issues then the fee would be waived.

At this point I'm worried that taking it to the dealer will result in them finding no issues and charging me the fee with no updates either since the issue is somewhat subjective. I believe my 2 options at this point are:

    1. Go to another dealer, not mention the update but only the conditions listed on the TSB
    2. Buy the cable/software and do it myself. I believe the diagnostic fee is around ~$130 so the hardware isn't that much more and I can guarantee I receive the update.

I think he was trying to help me out. I don't think they want people like us coming into the dealership telling them what we need. Like going to your doctor and telling them what drug to prescribe. This way, they can justify the TSB based on the listed complaints. We're supposed to come to them with the problem and they advise of the solution. If you list the issues exactly as they're listed on the TSB, an honest adviser should apply the fix as listed in the TSB. If they deny you, then I think you bust out the knowledge of the TSB.

Pay a diagnostic fee for a truck under warranty? That sounds like I'd be going somewhere else for anything from now on. I went with option 2 for the reasons you listed and it's just not worth my time going to the dealer even if they are willing to do it. You also get other functionality from techstream and if any updates come along in the future you are all set.

There is always option 3 - find someone local with a cable and techstream, then buy them a beer or a coffee for their efforts. There are a lot of guys out there that are willing to help you out. I am flashing a coworker's truck later today.

I wish there was a list of these dealerships that are so terrible. Mine was great. I gave them the TSB and they did it for free. No shenanigans. Tri County in Limerick PA

Oops, my mistake. Is that because the MTs aren't explicitly listed on some of the TSBs?

No worries! Getting a friendly list for everyone is great.

Yeah. MT were only partially listed in TSB-0058-18 and were removed from TSB-0125-18. It was a song and dance for a long while.

Good idea! I'll check the Indy region

Don't know if this is allowed but the dealer is Ed Martin Toyota in Noblesville, IN. I'll probably avoid them going forward as this is not the first time I've had issues. They tried to pull similar crap with the Fuel Pump recall. They also washed my car during a service a few days after I had my shell painted and had specifically instructed the service advisors not to wash my vehicle lol. Luckily I had my dash cam footage and made them agree that they would cover any paint issues.

Anyone have a good service writer at either Toyota Santa Cruz or in Sunnyvale Ca? I checked my ECU and it looks like I qualify for the update, also my stupid speedo needle is jumping around so I think it needs an instrument cluster. Can’t wait to get the update though!

Ok so I must be dumb or blind. Looked in the sticky if all the tsb updates and it’s not listed. Hasn’t been updated since November 2019 so I’m assuming I’m not finding the right thread. Will search when I’m not driving.
