I'm looking for a basic TRD OR Access Cab. I tried out the Costco program and a dealer contacted me just quoting a price $36,012 (no spec sheet or any details) for a MSRP of $38,707. However on the dealer's website that truck is listed for the same price and to make matters more complicated clicking the "ePrice" button drops that another $900. So going solely through Costco in this case would cost me $900. Is this common? Should I be challenging this "Costco price" and try bargaining further?

Edit: Also, does anyone know if the Costco "X amount below invoice" is supposed to include the manufacturer cash back?

Oddly, CarMax has a VooDoo Blue one on their site right now. If I was ready to pull the trigger today, I would buy it; but I need another month or two to get my down together.

    Hi everyone,

First time posting but long-time reader of the forums. I just purchased my first Tacoma today and wanted to share my price figures with you all to get your thoughts on the deal and to also help the community out.

    - 2021 Toyota Tacoma Off Road

    - Short Bed, Double Cab

    - 4WD 3.5L V6 Engine

    - 6-Speed Automatic Transmission

    - Magnetic Gray

    - TRD Off-Road Leather Trim In Black Interior.

    - TRD Premium Off-Road Package (Double Cab A/T) ($3815 MSRP)

    - Advanced Technology Package ($800 MSRP)

    - LED Headlights/Fog lights ($485 MSRP)

    - ToyoGuard Platinum ($699 MSRP)

    - Paint Protection Film (Hood & Door Package) ($618 MSRP)

    - Touch Keypad entry system ($349 MSRP)

    - Carpet Floor Mats ($329 MSRP)

    - LED interior light upgrade ($189 MSRP)

    - Phone Cable charging package with two rear usb ports ($199 MSRP)

The grand total MSRP for the vehicle was $45,883. I paid $44,501 out-the-door after tax, tag, title, and registration. The dealer had also installed three additional products that were listed an addendum label which they did not charge me for (window tint, touch screen protector, and an additional paint protection package)

For easy viewing and those who just like straight numbers

    Sticker price: $45,883

    Unit Price: $40,218

Dealer Doc Fee: $999 (State of Florida, I negotiated more off of the MSRP because of this)

    Taxes: $2,540.51

    License & Fees: $743.50

    -----------------------------------

    Total Cash Price: $44,501.01

Let me know your thoughts on this one. I feel like a got a decent deal on the truck and it had most of the options I wanted. The truck was on the lot for 55 days which i believe played into the dealers willingness to negotiate with me.

Looks like a good deal to me! Here in the MD / DC area the best offer among three dealers was $1,400 - $1,900 off MSRP for the TRD OR DCLB without the Premium / Tech packages.

I wonder if there is a bigger discount when the Premium / Tech packages are included since their profit margins are probably greater with the vehicles with those upgraded packages. Which are an over priced bundle at $5,900!

Thanks for the feedback Yeti. I can see how the manufacturer would build more margin into some of the optional accessories. It would give the dealer selling points with customers (saying they’ll throw in the carpet floor mats for free for example).

I did all of my negotiations online before I entered the dealership which made the process very efficient and focused on the OTD price for the entire conversation. Approximately 15 emails over the course of 24 hours.

Well done! How many dealerships did you contact and how many were willing to negotiate / compete for your business?

I spoke with 4 dealerships total, all within 50 miles of my house. I test drove two different trim levels of Tacoma's at different dealerships. A 2021 TRD Off Road similar to the one I ended up purchasing (no leather) and a 2021 TRD Pro that the dealer had on the show room floor.

Both dealers wanted to earn my business on the day of the test drive but I declined to start negotiations then since I wanted to give them the perception that I wasn't dead set on the truck. I didn’t begin negotiating with any of the dealerships until about 3 weeks later. Ironically the 1st dealership I contacted via email gave me the best price. (I had advised them that they were the furthest from my house so I believe that may have played a part as well).

They also already had the unit I purchased on the lot which made things easier.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that 3 of the 4 dealerships were willing to negotiate but no one was willing to match the price I was offered by the dealer I went with.

Similiar for me in that dealer #3 was the furthest away and was willing to lower his price the most ($550 less than my closest dealer) knowing that I was probably not going to drive an extra 30 miles to save $200. I never countered back to dealers #1 and #2 since I ultimately decided to wait till 2021. I am in no hurry and this pending purchase is more of a want than a need at this time. Did your discount include the $1,000 rebate or 1.9% financing option? I did not include that $1,000 rebate in the $1,400 - 1,900 off the MSRP. I would probably opt for the 1.9% financing.

I don’t want to judge anyone’s personal preference in any way, but I really want to understand this obsession with the TRD Pro. You get leather seats and a non adjustable Fox suspension. That’s it.

A far superior aftermarket 2.5 Fox setup on all 4 corners runs $2500 and that’s with external reservoirs and full adjustability.

The Fox suspension on your Pro needs to be rebuilt on the same schedule as any other Fox shock. When you take it to the dealer there’s a 4 week turn around time on that rebuild as they ship your shocks off to the Fox factory; dealer techs don’t have that skill, training, or tools.

    So what’s the appeal?

    Hello Everyone,

Been in the market since early 2020 for a new Tacoma TRD Off Road (From California). There's a truck for sale nearby with the color and premium/tech package that I have been looking for but the sales rep said the MSRP is $38,375. When I build the truck it shows $41,895. I looked up the vin and the truck does have the premium and tech package but I feel like I may be over looking something. Truck is about 250 miles away from home. This is what it shows on the spec sheet:

Once I decided I wanted a Tacoma. I went to the Toyota build page and built what I wanted. I clicked the request quote link and sent the information to 10 different Toyota dealers with the message “I am going to buy this Tacoma. I am looking for the lowest total price including shipping, administration, and any other fees”.

Note; this was at the end of September and I advised I was looking to order in time to buy Jan 2nd for tax reasons.

The first dealer to reply sent a copy of a very similar build sheet with MSRP and my cost. ALL the others replied we see you are interested in a Tacoma. Do you know what you want? Come in and we can see if we can locate something for you.

I advised the attached build sheet was what I wanted and would buy from who would give me the best price.

One dealer said they could not give me a price because they wouldn’t know what it would cost then. Four dealers quoted MSRP, although two of them came down a little later. The others were $1000 to $1500. under MSRP. Except the first dealer who replied to my 2nd e mail MSRP $37,277.00, my price 35,031. Note this was with a total four emails including replies.

The salesman closest to me who I would like to have bought from said they already presold four at MSRP. The day I purchased I did go in and speak to him and after about 30 or so minutes he gave me a “really great price” of about $700 off MSRP and acted like it upset him when I told him I would have to pass.

Anyway, to get to the point. I went to the first dealer who replied, to order my Tacoma.

I ordered Oct. 10th. MSRP $37,277.00 my cost $34,599. (If Toyota offers a higher rebate or incentive on Jan 2nd then the price would be lowered accordingly but would not be any higher). They will pick me up from my home on Jan 02 2021 and take me to dealership (I live about 50 miles or an hour away). Also after making the deal I asked if I needed to make a deposit and they replied, No we trust you.

So Ordered Oct. 10th. Advised Toyota was building my Tacoma Nov 4th., Advised it would arrive at dealership Between Nov. 23rd. and 28th., Contacted on Nov 25th. It was there. Nov 27th. Checked out and test drove my soon to be Tacoma. Patently waiting for Jan 2nd.

The Costco program clearly states in their brochures that you are entitled to all dealer incentives in addition to the discount through Costco. That being said, there is no guarantee that the Costco price will be the lowest you find, it is just a good place to start.

Good deal for the Covid climate. Not amazing but better than most. In the 8-9% off MSRP range. Subjective based on your valuation of the grossly over priced Southeast Toyota cartel port options which I estimated at $1800 of bs when arriving at 8-9.
I know Florida has insane document fees but is that $743 for license+fees normal too? I thought that was the point of the crazy document fees

Unless you’re financing $35,000+ or have a sub prime credit score, the 1k rebate usually works out better. These days an interest rate in the mid 2% is very achievable.
Run your numbers with this(don’t forget to take 1k off the purchase price of the rebate version.)

That's good to know about the VIN, I do have it and will try that out. However, I was hoping for something other than a single number from the dealer. Maybe it's something they won't give out unless I'm there in person. Regarding the green OR AC you're looking at - I know the exact one and was considering it (I live near there). Good to know the price on it - I won't step on your toes and will let you grab that one. I'm going for Magnetic Gray Metallic.

I’m not personally in this boat but, some people don’t have the time or desire to mess with their vehicles. And paying an extra $120/month has little to no significance. You also get the ease of everything being factory and factory warrantied, etc. something goes wrong you just bring it in and they fix it. LOL, the guy who bought a pro for a $10,000 increase due to market adjustment a few pages back very well might be in this boat

That's my problem though. They just threw out a single number. Nothing to say x amount dealer discount, y amount manufacturer incentive, z amount costco discount. Even if that all added to the same number that was advertised on the website that would have made me more comfortable.

Licensing fees were a bit higher since I didn't have a plate to transfer so I had to pay for the first time new vehicle registration. I could have easily shaved $225 off of the purchase price if I had transfered the plate from my other vehicle. Unfortunately my understanding is that the high doc fees are 95%-99% profit for dealers within the state. Obviously there are real costs associated with them but at the end of the day there's no such thing as $1,000 of paperwork for transfering documents lol.
