    Hello Taco Community!

I currently own a 2014 Tundra SR5 DBL CAB and a 2016 4Runner Limited. I have a fish market and the Tundra is one Bad-Ass Workhorse. Recently I’ve been watching videos of people overlanding and would love to build a vehicle over time to eventually drive out west.

I bought the Limited 4Runner bc it was too good of a deal to pass up. I’ll be trading it in for a Tacoma TRD Pro which I just ordered. However, I don’t know if I’m making the right decision.I have so many questions as I’m very new to this world of tinkering with trucks.

I went with the Pro bc I like the black rims, Heritage grill, and the 2.5 fox shocks.
Are these shocks good for overlanding?
I’d also like to switch out the tires for BF KO2’s. Will I be able to do so without having to replace anything else?
Is the TRD Pro a good choice for someone like myself that won’t be doing heavy off roading for another year or so and just want a pretty truck to get me and my kiddos around?
I also would like to get red brake calipers bc I’ve always liked the look. Any recommendations?

Thanks all and I hope someday to be able to contribute to he community.

Welcome. All depends on how much weight you add. If it’s significant, you’ll probably be pulling off that suspension. But you wouldn’t be the 1st person to do that. Enjoy making it your own

If you want to go for "the look", buy a SR5 and buy knockoff TRD Pro grille, stupid raptor lights, bed rack, RTT, light bars and then you'll fit in with the cool kids for $20k less.

Welcome to TW. I say buy an SR5 and do your own build. The shocks are good but most want more lift and just replace them anyways. I just picked up a sr5 trail special edition as my base and plan to build it up. This is my third Toyota pick up and SR5 with my own build was the only option for my needs.

If your looking for a good looking truck and your going to keep it stock and enjoy it the pro is great!
I should add if your rich and have lots of cash.

And with that $20k savings, you can spend it on OVTune, re-gearing, and then a supercharger/twin-turbo when you realize you are deeply saddened with the lack of power in the 3rd gen 3.5L Tacoma compared to your nice V8…

Keep the 4Runner. You can 'overland' just fine with it.

If you intend to use the truck for long trips/camping you may want to consider payload. I initially looked at TRDs & they all had payloads around 950 lbs. My SX has a payload of 1150 lbs.

That's as bad as a Honda Element or 2005 Subaru Forester.

Those definitely aren’t necessities. Figure out what you want. If you need the truck bed or not. There are a lot of ways you can start your build.

People 'overlanded' well before the advent of crawl control. Differentials can be modified much cheaper than buying a new truck.
