our gear is made extra cheap, light we mean light. Won't weigh you down.

 

I've got some of these like stretchy adventure khakis from Costco that are water wicking I'll wear if need be.

Honestly though, I planned on buying some cheap Walmart thermal leggings to wear under shorts.

 

you work for handup? you may have mentioned it a couple pages back.

no enduro look with knee pads and long socks? i have some road leg warmers i pop on if im feelin extra spicy, tucked in to my socks of course

 

I have this setup...DCSB with a Leer 100XR shell and a 1Up rack. You should have no issues with any of the possible problems that you wrote about.

My rack is as far forward as possible (as close to the bumper as possible). With my bike on the inward tray (closest to vehicle), the bars are about 4-5" away from the shell's rear window (780mm bar width). The rear window will open about halfway. If I tilt the rack down, I can open the shell window and the tailgate with no clearance issues...that's with bikes still on the rack.

With no bikes on the rack and the rack in the level position, I can open the tailgate all the way. It sits about 1/2" above the closed rack arms.

Do yourself a favor...get "The Handle" for your 1Up rack and it will never be a problem to raise & lower the rack with bikes on it.

I know nothing of Handup. I honestly just bought from them bc they are from Chattanooga. About 2 hours away from me.

 

Something to keep in mind...29er doesn't necessarily mean more pedal clearance. That has more to do with the type of bike, i.e. longer travel tends to mean lower BB and thus more pedal strikes likely.

I still think 29er is the way to go, but it sounds like you're saying contradicting things.

That's what's the maybe in all this. I need to get techstream set up so I can reset the airbags, and then get a good place to sleep! Otherwise, sleeping across the back seat is doable but not as comfortable. Probably won't have it in time for the end of this year, but hopefully by March if I do that trip to Texas. I won't have the MTB for either trip, so that's easier to manage at least.

1up is a great rack. a solution that I've seen on trucks is a swingaway. lets you swing the entire rack 90 degrees to open up the tailgate and stuff. I know a few people on this thread and forum have them. I've also seen them on 4runners. I've been thinking about getting one simply for making using the truck a little bit easier. trying to setup camp with the rack folded back and the tailgate down is a hassle.

 

I've ridden a trance 2 before. the maestro suspension is phenomenal. It's fairly effficient for pedaling and I felt like there was more in the rear than just 140mm. I enjoyed my time on it. I would love to ride the new reign and see hwo it feels in comparison. and now tha ti've had more time on other bikes, i'd also love to ride the trance 2 again to see if my feelings are the same. haha.

What he said. bb height is more deterministic in if you're gonna get more pedal strikes or not.

 

Yes! The swingaway is a game changer if you go camping with your bikes. It's also nice for just sitting on the tailgate at the trailhead after a ride.

I'm actually thinking about getting a second one for our new ride and then just moving the 1up back and forth. From what I can tell, the Kuat pivot v2 seems like the best design for a reasonable price.

I bought two roof racks and a double 2" hitch so I can change for whatever setup I want to run. I will say with 2 bikes on the rack the handle would be a very nice feature to have.

 

You may already know, but I’d strongly encourage you to look into windoor options on the shell if you haven’t ordered/purchased yet.

Gathering items out of the bed with a rack/bike can be an endeavor with a topper. The LB can exacerbate the challenge with items that are near the cab.

 

Yes - I am becoming well informed, thanks to the wealth of information that is on this forum. I don't have the truck yet, so there is plenty of opportunity for fact finding and research. If and when sleeping in the cap, a cross breeze / fresh air will help after a sweaty day of riding as well.
