Honestly if I end up looking for a <3k beater car/summer car/fun wagon, it will probably be an impreza.

Then you spend another 10K throwing an STI drivetrain in it, plus bolt ons and other goodness.

no I’d give a shit about the truck. That thing would be granny style. I wouldn’t want to do an STI thing because if it gets flattened by someone who can’t stop in time in the snow I wouldn’t give a shit. It’ll be lucky if it has oil changes.

This is my approach with my mom's 250,000 mile Outback! It burns AND leaks oil!

I still use 2WD most of the time. I suspect 4-Auto uses more gas. I just had to drive out to one of our elementary schools and once I was on the heavily salted state road I put it in 2WD for the 20 minute ride.

What years? The 02-07 wagon had real issues with rusty strut towers. It's the same with the Saabaru. I don't know if they solved it in 08+. I don't believe the sedans suffered from it as much.

Yeah, I've wondered about that, but the idiot gauge still says 19-21mpg average so I don't think it can be that bad. Although I am 99% highway driving so there is that.

    Damn, a cool teacher finally..

I would have been giving lessons on riding a bike in the stuff back then..

Very cool thinking outside the box there.

Both of Cupcake's RAV4s (2005 and 2014) were fulltime AWD. Worked fine even in awful weather

So it's like recycling oil then..eco friendly

Right, it got tired of 2wd-4wd-2wd-4wd-2wd and decided to throw a 0wd into the mix

My first car was a 1974 Datsun B210, in baby diarrhea brown. The gas gauge did not work and after a 2.5 hour trip with the oil slightly above the full mark on the dipstick it would be slightly below the empty mark upon arrival. I literally could pull into a gas station and tell the attendant to check the gas and fill the oil!

I dated a girl who'd inherited a Civic from her grandmother that was like that. You could engage 'crop duster' mode at will by burying the throttle, but it still got like 45mpg and ran like a top.

I learned a lot about cars owning it. Mostly because I screwed up some repair that was needed. It was a good car to screw up on and learn on.

As the first of my friends who knew how to change his own oil and perform basic maintenance (cap/rotor/plug/wires tuneup, air filters, shock absorbers, etc) it wasn't long before I got roped into 'helping' replace brake parts, water pumps/heater cores, and things of that nature. A buddy of mine and I spent the better part of a week trying to figure out how to put the top end of his motor back together after deciding that head gasket couldn't be that difficult if a Haynes Manual could explain it in less than two pages. This was before the internet had really come of age, so no youtube tutorials. We had a hell of a time figuring out where all those parts belonged, but it still ran when we finally bolted it all back together so we called it a win

I tried to do an oil change at college one time. Oil filter would not come off. Someone suggested the screwdriver through the oil filter trick. Didn't work. Then I just had a stock oil filter flange on the car. Luckily in college there are many young healthy, strong guys you can recruit to help you push your car to the local garage to fix the problem. So much for a cheap oil change. But on that car, I never had to change the oil, just the filter. It never had the same oil in it for more than a month. It all went out the tailpipe.
