That is a sweet bird you have optioned with Ram Air. They didn’t make a Ram Air motor called a Ram Air I though. The first Ram Air designated motor was simply called Ram Air in 1967. Which yours must be. The second Ram Air motor was dubbed Ram Air II which was late in 1968 and short lived. Then also in 1968 the Ram Air III came out and then in 1969 the Ram Air IV came out which used the radical cam and round port heads that the Ram Air II used. There was a Ram Air V being worked on in late 1969 but it never made it to the public due to the timing with epa laws and lower compression ratios. Although the parts to make a Ram Air V were sold over the counter. Some were built and made it to the drag strips.

Oh, and like yours my Ram Air IV came with 3:90 gears / Turbo 400. Which I later went even more radical with and dropped in a 12 bolt with 456 gears.

Semantics. Pontiac Historic Services called it a RA1, as does every Poncho expert and parts catalog that I know. The shop that built my motor offers RA5 components in aluminum based on the originals. The owner currently has one based on a 455 in his '68 convertible. It scares the shit out of me.

As noted above. my car had a 4-speed manual. It now has a 5-speed Tremec. The 428 and Tremec combination fragged the non-original 10-bolt that was in the car back in 2003 on Power Tour. I now have a Moser 12-bolt with 33 spine axles and an Eaton posi unit. The weak link is now the tires, and I plan to keep it that way

Guy I went to high school with had one with that paint scheme. Bought it from a rental car company if I remember right.
He wasn't so bright though - someone bet him that he couldn't drive it on the ice from the boat ramp in town to the camping spot up the river.
One of my brothers was along for the ride as a witness. Didn't make it. Car fell through the ice. Didn't completely submerge, but when it crashed through, it fell straight down until it hit bottom, but the doors were wedged shut by the ice and they had to roll down the windows to climb out.
So funny at the time, so sad to think about now.

Too bad you don't live in Virginia. The governor just signed a bill into law that says cars can't be pulled over by police for noise, so I think you'll soon see (or hear) cars with "straight pipes" running the roads of Virginia...lol

I'd like to do that to one vehicle and circle the governor's mansion all night, every night...lol

I’ve never heard it called a Ram Air I, only Ram Air then the Ram Air II then the III and the IV.

By the way that’s not in any way saying your Bird isn’t a sweet machine. It’s very nice how you’ve built it. Taking it back to original specs would quite a task but worth it in my opinion.

Most of us have done stupid things with cars when we were younger. I used to load up my Pontiac (dis)Astre wagon with classmates at lunch time, and go blow some 70 MPH donuts on the frozen Bay of Quinte back in high school. I look back now, and wonder how I never hit a pressure crack while going sideways. At those speeds, it would have been ugly.

I used to take my old K car miles into the woods on old logging roads, alone, with no cell phone, during the winter. Got stuck a couple of times, too, but fortunately never badly enough that I couldn't get it out on my own. Same/Same with my old 2wd Nissan pickup (I know, I know, Datsun). No snow tires on either, most years, just the cheapest all-seasons I could buy. Both would have been ugly if I'd had to hike out, because my 'winter' jacket in high school was uninsulated denim with a fairly light fleece vest on underneath it.

    Dumb.

They are not branded as "Coyote" engines either, but that's what everyone calls them. I can likely find a reference to cite that states that using that term is incorrect. An accepted reference in common usage vs. official marketing materials. Semantics. I have been around Pontiacs since the ones we are talking about were new, and I have never heard anyone NOT call it a Ram Air 1. I've had this car for 22 years and this is the first time someone dropped the 1. Sure, okay...don't care. If Jim Mattison took the time to hand write "Your FB came equipped with the Ram Air 1 engine" on PHS letterhead, that's enough proof of common usage for me.

I predicted and feared you’d take it that way. I also have been around Pontiacs since these cars were new. Never heard it referred to as a Ram Air I, only Ram Air for the first Ram Air motor reference. I’m quite surprised that Jim Mattison used a slang term as Ram Air 1 when documenting the car when it’s an incorrect term of the motor. No big deal just stating facts. Pretty cool to have your bird documented though. It is a slang term and should be noted as such.

It’s a beautiful car. Don’t take it so personal. I didn’t write the books I just try to stay true to them. We’re both Pontiac enthusiasts and Taco enthusiasts so we’ve got that common ground. I will admit I do tend to take things a bit too far on these boards on occasion and I apologize for that.
