About to take delivery of my 2020 and looking to see if anyone had found a better solution to this.

If not I’ll tinker when my off-road arrives.

I found the correct cable for the jbl 2020 headunit not sure of the non JBL head unit.
This is the cable that you need to get.
    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000904194171.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.46aa4c4daIskwO

Then you can unplug the usb that goes under the radio but leave it in the slot because never else will fit there, and then plug in the new cable to the back of the headunit and route it to the center console box. that is what I did and it is working great.
I am also using the cartoair carplay wireless adapter and it is working great.

    awesome, just ordered it in.

how are you liking the cartoair? Any issues with it. As I’m debating ordering it and having it hidden behind the dash.

It needs to plug into the usb so that is why I extended the cable and it is in the center console, instead of under the radio.

It works good, there is a slight delay maybe 1 second when you switch songs and there is a half a second delay on phone calls but you get use to it.

And I think the delay goes away with the faster phone you get, they also do firmware updates all the time.

I also got this cable, it has an A/B switch on it so I can have a usb stick plugged in and cartoair plugged in and use the a/b to switch between the 2.

It is the only solution I can find that will work. Hubs will not work

I think my next investment will be a new head unit with wireless CarPlay. Nice write up and I agree they picked the worst of the 3 to usb plugs to have CarPlay.

    Awesome! Good find!
There's also a rumor of an android auto wireless adapter kickstarter on XDA forums. that should be appearing soon for all you non-apple people. Like me

Didn’t take any pictures. But I purchased the adapter harness from aliexpress, unplugged the factory media port from the back of the radio, plugged in the new port, finagled it down to the center console and attached it to a 6ft anker usb to lightning cord.

Lastly I put a tiny notch next to the USB ports in the console, just enough for the cord itself and reassembled.

with that I have a 6ft black lightning cable that can reach anywhere in the cabin, and is wired for media.

yeah the factory port is dead, but I’ll never use it and it’s easily reversible.

Good to know the cable worked!

I ended up moving the factory port itself into the center console and then where the factory power used to be, putting a fast charging USB port in its place for the passengers.

worked perfectly, plenty of length as well, and prompt delivery from China/aliexpress. Only took like a week.

and I’m sure I’ll replace the media port with something else in the future, light switch, anytime camera switch, etc. But I’ve only had the truck two weeks so...

Any idea if the cable above would work on the non-JBL radio in a 2021 OR? I currently have the OEM USB cable disconnected from the port and floating behind the dash with a USB extension running up to a DMM mounted phone. The whole connection is wrapped in electrical tape to protect the OEM pins but wouldn't mind switching out and setting aside the OEM cable.

Yes it will. I ran that specific cable, along with a extension to my center compartment in my non Jbl 2020 sport. Works great.

Awesome, thanks. Having a "false" USB port in the dash is worth cleaning up the cable to my phone.

I'm thinking about buying one for my 2021 OR. I'll report back if all goes well.
