Hello, does anyone know if a 4x4 front wheel bearing/knuckle assy. will fit a 2 wheel drive pre-runner, so I won't have to press the bearing in/out ? Will be able to simply buy another hub & bolt on. Thanks

The spindle itself is identical, so is the wheel bearing.

But the hub axle is different as the 4x4 variant supports the axle that comes from the front diff.

There's also the fact that some have abs and others do not.

Hey thanks, ... but I'm wanting to put ABS 4x4 knuckles on my prerunner to allow for easier future wheel bearing replacements.

Well if you understood what I said above...

You can use 4x4 spindles, what you are referring to as knuckles (yes Toyota calls them steering knuckles as well), you can use them once you replace the hub axle with the appropriate component. The hub axles are different as a Prerunner is 'capped off', and 4x4 components have a hub axle in which the cv axle slides into.

When you say easier wheel bearing replacement, I think you meant, less downtime on your vehicle by having a set done for you and waiting install?

Replacing the wheel bearings on Prerunner spindles and 4x4 spindles are no different from each other.

Slight changes in verbiage can altogether change the meaning of a statement entirely.

To my knowledge, a spindle/hub is what attaches to the wheel; however, a knuckle is the iron casting located between the upper & lower ball joints. My question was somewhat answered as to whether a 4x4 “knuckle” would fit on a prerunner truck (mine has ABS, yours did not). It looks to be in the same location, just not sure about direct plug in. Wheel bearing servicing is most definitely different. A prerunner used a pressed-in non serviceable sealed bearing which requires periodic replacing by removal of the “knuckle” assy. , and either having a large press or taking it to a repair facility that does. ( Toyota wants $300 + to do this ). On the other hand, a 4x4 “knuckle” assy. uses 4 easily accessible bolts to hold on a serviceable hub (spindle) which according to you tube, can be replaced without “knuckle removal” or pressing requirements, …. by me. These replacement bolt on hubs can be purchased all day long. Overall, $700 vs $3oo and being able to do it myself in less than 3 hours for both sides is a no brainer. Just need to make the 1st initial investment in 4x4 “knuckles”. Information was appreciated, thanks ….. Tony

And yes, there are 4x4 knuckles that have ABS. Verified by pics and Toyota service/parts departments.

If the servicing between the two is easier on one than the other, than that's great to hear!

You don't need to let me know that they're the same; that's what I have been trying to tell you.

The spindles listed above aren't mine, they are a set that are available for purchase.

Prerunner and 4x4 spindles are both available with and without abs, yes I know this. You simply confirmed it.

Just trying to offer information based on how they're the same, and how they're different.

    @awkdeere
2nd gen 4wd front wheel bearings are the easy bolt on.
    1st gen 4wd require 40 Ton pressing

Winner, this is the answer, Gen2 has 4 bolts for bearing assembly, Gen1 need to press in and out.

I knew 1st gen spindles required pressing regardless if they're 4x4 or Prerunner; I just wasn't sure what the OP meant when he corrected me.

They're the same for Prerunner and 4x4 with the exception of the axle hub.

I'm sorry, ... still learning my new used Tacoma ..... you guys are correct about the 1st generation but I looked and saw a you tube video of a girl removing this hub as an assy. I just need now to find complete 1st gen hub to install. Anyone know where I can get this ? Thanks and I apologize again for my mistake. Tony

@Abeyancer recently found new ones for manual hubs, maybe that source will provide some for Prerunners.

Most of us use Rockauto unless it's an important part like a lower ball joint, then we suggest OEM.
