Advice on buying a Taco

Hey guys, need some advice. I’m looking at buying a 2016 Tacoma, 4door, TRD Sport. It’s one owner, clean title/Carfax, jbl sound system/touch screen, with 89000 miles. Looks great. He’s selling it to me for what he owes on it, which is $22,700. It seems like a good deal, especially when I compare it to what I can get at a dealer. My only concern is the high-ish mileage. Should that be a concern? What do you guys think?

 

90k miles shouldn't alone be concern. You'll probably need to base it on your impression of the seller: is it a young guy who looks like he would have driven it hard? Or does he look like someone who just used it as a basic daily driver?

Basically, were they 90k easy miles and the truck is just getting broken in? Or were they 90k hard miles and he's selling it because the truck is worn out and is due for an overhaul?

 

4x4 or 4x2?

 

Welcome to the forum. If you really want to know if it’s a good price run the vehicle thru several online companies that make instant offers and see what they are offering. If the $22700 is lower by a couple thousand then you’re getting a good deal.

 

Just me, but i never buy used vehicles unless knowing who previously owned it...especially with over 50k miles.

 

Depends on the flavor, me personally I like adobada, if it's asada I say go for it

 

You can always get it inspected by a 3rd party, but yeah that sounds like a steal if it is a 4WD.

 

Try to get an impression whether its a lot of freeway miles from long commutes and/or road trips or if the mileage comes from driving a ton of short trips frequently. Doing a lot of trips where the engine doesn't fully warm up will be a lot harder on it than longer trips regardless of whether he's an aggro driver or not.

 

Owes 22,700 on a 2016 with 90k on it. Wow! I owe like 20k on my 2020 with 3700 miles. People just don't put much down on vehicles these days.

 

Thanks for the input. It’s a 2X4 unfortunately. 4X4’s have been out of my price range. I was looking for 2 Wheel Dr. TRD’s because of the limited slip differential. The owner is 64 years old and just wants to get out from under it.

@Shelf Life i sold it. I bought it wrecked and got it fixed up, but I wasn’t happy with the bodywork. I was able to sell it and make about 1000 bucks on it. Now I’m looking for one that hasn’t been wrecked

 

Get a mechanic (someone that works on Toyotas) to go thru it for you either in advance or as part of the transaction and document its condition. Its well worth the hassle and minor expense - then you can make an informed decision on buying it, and its value.

 

You don't have to get a TRD for limited slip as they all have computer simulated limited slip.
