So here is my current situation. I can put the belt on one notch off but then I have slack on the water pump side. Will the tensioner rid me of that slack? The red line is where the white one that said cr was.

Realized you couldn’t see the TDC mark on the gear lined up well.

Okay I think I got it! This is as close as I can get it. Notice the crank just a shade to the left. Is that okay??

What happens when you snug it clockwise to perfect? Does it start to move timing gears immediately? It should just pull out ALL slack from right side. That's what to shoot for. It really should all look just perfect before pulling pin or there is slack still on right.

    edit: That's really close though.

I’ve got it as close as I can without it jumping off the crank. When I tighten it, it’s definitely tighter than it was. I can get real tight but it’s either off a smidge at the crank or the cams. Not too sure I can get it any tighter. It will spin the gears if I don’t hold the cams and turn the crank.

tighten the tensioner and pull pin, rotate twice. Should all be just right. It's close enough for sure to run okay but length of belt is supposed to be perfect for timing marks to be perfect on all on right side. Left side for slack.

edit: Seems to be the reason is the slack not being taken up in top photo between the cams properly before pulling out with crank. It's a finigley game to get everything tight ALL on the right side.

If you don’t feel it’s right re align everything put the idler pulley on last, easiest way to do it.

I really cannot get any more slack out of it. All my marks are lined up except for one can but there is no way to get it any tighter. Turning either the crank or cam

I wish I could send a video here and see what y’all think. I haves pulled the tensioner grenade yet but I honestly don’t think there’s any way to get it lined up any more.

The marks on the belts are lined up with the cams and it’s as tight as I can possibly get it. More pics in next post. Slow internet out in the sticks.

Your previous post looks fine IMO. Your belt lines all meet there positions and all the slack is left for the tensioner. I’d pull it and rotate it a few times, make sure it’s smooth and you can get your timing lines to match back up. The belt lines will no longer match up. This is normal

As previously stated though, if you’re uncomfortable with how it looks pull it all off and do it again.

    Howdy, just my 2 cents.
    1. Tim is the MAN
    2. You may have an easier time (looks like you got it already) if you remove the cog on the crank if it is not too stuck on. Mine came right off and it was easy to put the new belt on. (I attribute this to never driving in winter salt.... with out the front splash pan on to keep water / moisture away from the front of the motor)

this was before I tightened the tensioner bolts up. I still haven’t pulled the pin. Look at the most recent pics. The slack can’t be taken out anymore than it is in the last picture.

Yes, Tim rocks. I had to use a puller to pull my cog off. Btw the oreilly chicken foot puller works with some bolts like Tim has listed in his video. I had a tiny bit of surface rust on the crank and a bad woodruff key so I buffed that off and got a new key on and now it slides on easy. Also put a little oil on the shaft and the inside of the gear to make it easier. I’m pretty sure I got it now, just don’t want to pull the tensioner grenade and it be wrong. Not that it’s unfixable, just a major aggravation. Think I’ll do it later and turn it a couple rounds to see what it acts like.

If the marks are right on and ALL slack is at tensioner, that's it.

edit: it just takes a little bit of rolling things back just a hair so that when you finally roll the crank into line everything pulls with it. Along with everylast bit of slack.

Aight I’m going to try it later then if the consensus is it’s good. My harmonic balancer didn’t come with the snail mail today so I guess we’ll see if it gets here Monday.... Note: Always pay extra for UPS or Fedex

It looks good to me in your new bottom photo. Your next ones will be easier. Now you've had practice on truck so you can help someone do a front wheel drive.

Don't for get you're in the height of Christmas AND they are shipping vaccine everywhere too.

    10-4 sounds good.

honestly would be understandable but the balancer was only 2.5 hours drive away and I got a backache in the mail today that was shipped the same day and came from Portland, so it’s quite annoying. Whatever tho, I’ll just drive the super duty another couple days.

Balancer came in, installed, cam bolt torqued and test crank before putting all the belts and radiator back in and we are good to go!

Now everything is done and it runs like a top again. Now to see if I can get my money back on the valve cover gasket job I had done back in March that wasn't right and hasn't been right after 4 visits.... now I'm looking at it, seems like it would have been an easier job to do had I done it while the timing cover was off to replace cam seals, but it's a little late for that now.
